Why is centella useful in winter?

Cold weather and low humidity make it harder for skin to hold moisture. Indoor heating dries the air further. Together, these conditions can disrupt the skin barrier, the outer layer that keeps moisture in, leaving skin dry and itchy. Temperature changes can also stress that barrier.123

Centella supports the barrier's ability to retain moisture and helps calm inflammation. That makes it a useful option for dryness and sensitivity, including skin prone to eczema or rosacea. Centella also appears on labels as cica, tiger grass or gotu kola, because apparently one plant needed a whole naming department.1

What results should you expect?

The practical goal is better hydration and calmer looking skin. Centella can make skin appear plumper through hydration. Its active compounds include asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid, which have anti inflammatory and tissue repair activity. Its potential as a treatment for skin disease remains uncertain, so keep centella separate from prescribed treatment decisions.145

There is no established timetable for centella to improve ordinary winter dryness. Wound healing benefits are promising, but using a cosmetic centella product for seasonal dryness is not the same as treating a wound.5

How should you use centella in winter?

  1. 1Test a small amount on your inner arm first. Wait at least 24 hours before using the product more widely.
  2. 2Wash with warm rather than hot water and a gentle, moisturizing cleanser. Choose fragrance free skincare.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer immediately after washing to trap existing moisture. A centella cream is a practical option because it stays on the skin. Follow your product's directions for frequency; centella has no universal morning or evening schedule.
  4. 4In the morning, apply sunscreen over moisturizer. Choose broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30 or higher for exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears and hands.

Should you choose a serum or cream?

Creams and ointments are more effective for dry skin than lighter lotions. Look for moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, petrolatum or shea butter alongside centella. A centella serum can be an extra, but a richer moisturizer is the winter priority, so the extra bottle does not get promoted to management. You do not have to replace every product just because the season changes.23

If exfoliating acids or retinol become irritating in winter, use them less often or at a lower strength. Centella is not a reason to push through irritation. A filtered, cool mist bedroom humidifier can also help prevent and relieve dryness caused by dry indoor air.23

Who should be careful?

Stop using the product if it causes burning or a rash. Centella allergy is rare but possible. Ask a dermatology clinician before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a history of liver problems or skin cancer. If dryness is not improving with home care, see a dermatologist rather than waiting for skin to crack or bleed.13
