What is the difference?
| Comparison | Heartleaf | Centella |
|---|---|---|
| Plant name | Houttuynia cordata | Centella asiatica, also called gotu kola or tiger grass |
| Practical skincare role | Calming support when redness accompanies oily, acne prone skin | Soothing support when skin is mainly dry or irritated |
| Research focus | Antibacterial, antioxidant and inflammation reducing activity | Inflammation reduction and wound healing |
| Compounds studied | Flavonoids, including quercetin | Asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid |
| Strength | Extract composition changes with extraction method | Active compound content changes with plant material and extraction method |
Neither plant name tells you the texture, application directions or price of a finished product. Compare actual cleansers, serums or moisturizers rather than assuming every heartleaf product competes with every centella product. An ingredient name is not a complete formula, even when the front of the bottle treats it like a job title.1
What results can you reasonably expect?
Treat heartleaf as supportive skincare, not your main acne treatment. Heartleaf extracts have shown activity against acne associated bacteria in laboratory testing. Its practical role is helping keep skin calmer alongside consistent cleansing, moisturizing and sunscreen.1
Centella has human clinical research on wound healing, but the evidence remains limited: a systematic review included four clinical trials. Centella might help healing through effects on collagen production and the formation of small blood vessels. For everyday skincare, choose it for soothing support rather than expecting a cosmetic serum to treat a wound or remove scars. There is no established timetable for either ingredient to improve everyday redness or breakouts.2
How do you introduce a new product?
- 1Test the finished product on a spot about the size of a quarter underneath your arm or in the bend of your elbow.
- 2Apply your usual amount twice daily for seven to 10 days.
- 3Leave it on for its normal contact time. For a cleanser, use five minutes or the time specified in its instructions.
- 4If the test area stays free of redness, itching and swelling, introduce the product into your routine.
Heartleaf can fit morning or evening routines. Apply a tolerated heartleaf toner or serum after cleansing, follow with moisturizer, and use sunscreen in the morning. Introduce one new product at a time, especially alongside retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating acids or prescription acne care. These are general layering principles; follow the directions for your chosen product.1
For dry skin, prioritize a moisturizer that reduces water loss. Ointments retain moisture most effectively but feel greasier; lotions contain less oil, and creams sit between them. A calming serum does not replace moisturizer, even if its name sounds ready to run the whole routine.15
Can either irritate sensitive skin?
Yes. Botanical ingredients, fragrance and preservatives can cause reactions, so a soothing ingredient does not make the whole product suitable for sensitive skin. Allergic contact dermatitis is an itchy, inflamed reaction to something touching your skin. If fragrance triggers your reactions, choose fragrance free products; unscented products can still contain fragrance related ingredients.46
If a new product causes redness, itching or swelling, gently wash it off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve the reaction. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe or does not settle with those measures. Repeated reactions warrant medical patch testing to identify the trigger, rather than repeatedly switching between heartleaf and centella. Continue prescribed treatment if you are using skincare alongside care for dermatitis.45
