What are you actually buying?

Centella is an ingredient, not one specific skincare product; creams, serums and other formulas need separate judgments. Cica, tiger grass and gotu kola are names for the same plant.1

Centella contains active plant compounds called triterpenes, including asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. A whole plant extract and an individual compound are different preparations, so research about one is not a reason to treat every centella formula as interchangeable. Centella has been called a panacea for thousands of years, which is a rather ambitious job description for a plant.23

Which benefits deserve your attention?

Hydration is the clearest everyday reason to consider centella, especially for dry or sensitive skin. It helps the skin barrier retain moisture and reduces redness and inflammation. For inflammatory conditions such as acne or eczema, centella is a supporting ingredient alongside appropriate treatment, not a replacement.1

Wound healing is a major focus of centella research, including work on small wounds, burns and hypertrophic scars, which are raised scars. Laboratory and animal experiments have explored collagen formation, wound closure and the strength of newly formed tissue. These are healing processes, not a timetable for how quickly a cosmetic serum will change your face.23

Experimental work has tested centella extracts in ointments, creams and gels, as well as individual compounds such as asiaticoside. Some animal experiments found faster wound closure and increased collagen at the wound site. Everyday skincare benefits should be judged separately from those experimental wound treatments; centella's broad therapeutic claims still need stronger clinical support.3

How should you try centella?

  1. 1Choose a cream, serum or lotion that stays on the skin rather than a product you immediately rinse away.
  2. 2Test the product on your inner arm and wait at least 24 hours before applying it to your face.
  3. 3If the test causes burning or a rash, do not proceed with facial use.

Who should check before using it?

Allergy is uncommon but possible, including contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin reaction. Ask a dermatology healthcare professional before using centella if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a history of liver problems or skin cancer.1

Does centella help stretch marks?

Products containing centella may help prevent stretch marks. Prevention and removal are different promises, even if a jar would prefer not to dwell on the distinction. Existing stretch marks are permanent scars, although treatment can make them less noticeable. A prevention claim is not a reason to expect centella to erase established marks.4

If you try a cream for existing stretch marks, early marks respond better than mature ones. Massage the product gently into the skin and apply it daily for weeks; visible changes, if they occur, take weeks. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before using stretch mark treatments. If repeated purchases bring no improvement, a dermatologist can discuss more effective options.4
