What does Centella asiatica do?
Centella asiatica is a medicinal plant also called gotu kola, tiger grass or cica. Its important active compounds include asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. Those names can appear individually in a formula rather than under the plant's full name. Centella helps skin retain moisture and reduces redness and inflammation. Its hydrating role makes it relevant to dry, sensitive skin, including skin affected by eczema or rosacea. Support for moisture retention is a more practical reason to choose a cream than expecting dramatic changes to wrinkles. Centella's compounds have also been investigated for wound healing and collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps give skin structure. Laboratory and animal experiments have found increased collagen formation and improved healing with particular Centella preparations. Research has also examined small wounds, burns and raised scars. A daily cosmetic moisturizer is not interchangeable with a wound care preparation.1345
What do peptides add?
Peptides are short strings of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. The idea behind topical peptides is to support proteins such as collagen and elastin, which help skin stay strong and flexible. Peptides can also have anti inflammatory effects, and some research suggests benefits for aging skin. The finished formula matters. A cream also contains ingredients that moisturize, hold water or affect how its active ingredients work. The whole formula matters more than the featured names on the jar, which do not get to take sole credit for the cream. Two products carrying the same ingredient headline can therefore perform differently. Peptides are not essential to a useful moisturizer, and paying more does not settle whether a particular cream will work well for you.26
Centella and peptides have different roles
| Feature | Centella asiatica | Peptides |
|---|---|---|
| What they are | A plant extract or compounds isolated from it. | Strings of amino acids. |
| Main reason to consider them | Moisture retention and help with redness and inflammation. | Possible support for skin proteins and reduced inflammation. |
| Research focus | Hydration, wound healing, collagen production and possible effects on sun related aging. | Possible improvements in signs of aging through effects on inflammation and skin proteins. |
| What still matters | The preparation and the rest of the cream. | How the peptides are formulated with other ingredients. |
How do you choose a cream?
For dryness and sensitivity, prioritize a moisturizing formula you can tolerate rather than the number of named actives. Centella is a reasonable ingredient to consider for that purpose. For fine lines or loss of flexibility, peptides are an option, but the cream's overall quality matters more than their presence alone. The base also affects texture and delivery. A cream is usually thicker than a lotion, although skincare naming has never been burdened by strict consistency. Manufacturers use those names differently, so the word "cream" does not tell you exactly how rich a product will feel. There is no universal Centella percentage to choose from these ingredient names alone. Centella research includes different extracts and isolated compounds, and the plant's active compound content varies with its origin. An extract percentage and a percentage of an isolated compound are different things.1236
How do you use it?
- 1Test the finished cream on your inner arm first. Wait at least 24 hours and check for burning or a rash before applying it to your face.
- 2Use the cream as a moisturizer that stays on the skin. Centella creams, lotions and serums give the ingredient longer contact than products that are rinsed away.
- 3For moisturizing, apply after washing while skin is slightly damp. General guidance for emollients, which soften and moisturize skin, favors application within three minutes of a bath or shower.
- 4If you use a prescribed topical steroid and an emollient, apply the steroid to the affected areas first, wait a few minutes, then apply the emollient more widely.
The ingredient combination alone does not set an application amount, daily frequency or morning versus evening schedule. Follow the directions for the finished product rather than borrowing a schedule from another Centella or peptide cream. With prescriptions, keep the prescribed sequence instead of assuming that every moisturizing cream has the same instructions.6
What results should you expect?
Hydrated skin can look plumper, making moisture support a realistic aim. Changes to wrinkles, sun related aging or scars are less certain. There is no established results deadline for an unspecified Centella and peptide cream, and wound healing timelines from animal experiments are not a timetable for facial skincare. Treat peptides as optional rather than a reason to replace an otherwise useful routine. Cleansing, moisturizing and reducing sun exposure remain the basics; adding more active ingredients is a separate choice.124
Who should be careful?
Centella is tolerated by most people, but rare allergic reactions include burning and contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin rash. Stop using the cream if it causes burning or a new rash, and seek medical advice about the reaction. Ask your dermatology healthcare provider before using Centella if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or have a history of liver problems or skin cancer. A cream's pregnancy suitability also depends on its other ingredients, including any medicines it contains.16
