This is a practical choice based on cleansing needs, not a tested winner for dehydrated oily skin. The comparison below uses the Canadian cleanser descriptions; US formula details are identified separately.2
What is the difference?
| Feature | Hydrating Cleanser | Foaming Cleanser |
|---|---|---|
| Main skin type | Normal to dry | Normal to oily |
| Texture | Non foaming lotion | Gel that forms a foam |
| Main purpose | Cleanses and moisturises | Removes excess oil while supporting the protective barrier |
| Named ingredients in the Canadian descriptions | Three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid | Three essential ceramides |
| Practical reason to choose it | Dryness and discomfort matter more than oil removal | Excess oil matters more, without tightness after washing |
| General cleansing schedule | Morning and evening | Morning and evening |
Hydrating Cleanser has a lotion texture, so do not expect the lather you get from Foaming Cleanser. Foam is a texture, not a receipt proving your face is clean. Pick the cleansing feel you need rather than treating bubbles as the deciding feature.13
The US Foaming Facial Cleanser ingredient list includes glycerin, niacinamide, three ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. Check the ingredients on the bottle you are buying, because CeraVe updates its lists. Compare local prices using the same bottle size, or calculate the price per millilitre.3
Which should you try first?
Start with Foaming when you need to remove excess surface oil and prefer a refreshing gel. Start with Hydrating when your current wash leaves you dry or uncomfortable. A very mild cream cleanser can provide too little cleansing for oily skin, while a cleanser that is too harsh can cause moisture loss, tightness and flaking. The useful result is enough cleansing without those symptoms, not the strongest possible wash.2
How should you wash?
- 1Remove makeup fully before cleansing.
- 2Wet your face with lukewarm water rather than hot water.
- 3Apply your chosen cleanser using gentle circular movements with your hands. Do not scrub vigorously.
- 4Rinse thoroughly so cleanser residue does not remain.
- 5Dry your face with a clean, dry towel, then follow with moisturiser.
General cleansing guidance is twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Morning washing removes oils accumulated overnight; evening washing removes the day's dirt, makeup and excess oil. More aggressive cleansing is not the answer to a wash that already leaves your skin uncomfortable.24
CeraVe Hydrating vs Foaming Cleanser for combination skin in winter
Combination skin has oily areas and dry areas, often an oily forehead, nose and chin with drier cheeks. Colder conditions can change your skin's needs. Keep Foaming if oil removal remains the priority and washing feels comfortable; consider Hydrating if dryness becomes the bigger issue.12
Hydrating Cream to Foam and Balancing Air Foam are separate products, because apparently two cleanser names would have been too straightforward. The US Balancing Air Foam is designed for normal to combination skin with oiliness and dryness together. Its formula includes ceramides, allantoin and amino acids; its oil control and hydration claims belong to that product, not the original Foaming Cleanser.35
When should you change course?
Do not keep using an uncomfortable cleanser simply because its skin type label matches yours. Dryness, tightness, irritation and flaking are reasons to reconsider the wash and your technique. Get medical advice for persistent irritation or a severe skin concern.12
