Who is it best for?

The strongest fit is someone who wants a cream for dryness and prefers a richer texture. Cetaphil describes the texture as rich but non greasy, leaving your fingers to conduct the final interview. The Canadian cream is intended for both face and body, so the packaging does not require your moisturizer to maintain separate departments. For dry skin, creams and ointments generally add more moisture than lotions.14

What does the formula actually do?

The Canadian ingredient list includes glycerin, petrolatum, dimethicone, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, panthenol and niacinamide. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water to help hydrate skin. Petrolatum and silicone ingredients act as occlusives: they form a surface film that slows moisture loss. Emollients help smooth the gaps between shedding skin cells. These are complementary moisturizing jobs, not competing claims. The practical reason to choose the cream is that combination of hydration and moisture retention. The presence of niacinamide alone is not a reason to buy it for a different skin concern.12

How quickly should it help?

Cetaphil claims immediate relief, nourishment within one day, replenishment of the skin's moisture barrier within one week, and hydration lasting 48 hours after one application for the Canadian cream. Treat those as the brand's performance claims, not a timetable for treating eczema. Daily use and reapplying when skin feels dry remain the practical approach.14

How to use it on your face

For dry facial skin, use this general moisturizing routine:

  1. 1Wash with a gentle, fragrance free cleanser. Use enough to remove dirt and oil without building a thick lather.
  2. 2Gently pat your skin rather than rubbing it dry, and apply the cream while your skin is still damp.
  3. 3Massage the moisturizer gently into your skin. Reapply whenever your face feels dry, including several times a day if needed.
  4. 4For daytime sun protection, use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Also seek shade and wear protective clothing.

Is it enough for facial eczema?

For atopic dermatitis, a common form of eczema, moisturizer belongs alongside prescribed treatment rather than replacing it. Moisturizers combined with active topical treatment produce better results than active treatment alone. Older testing of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream found improved hydration after two weeks but no significant improvement in eczema severity or water loss through the skin. That older formula differs from the current Canadian ingredient list. Choose based on comfort and regular use, not an expectation that Cetaphil is uniquely effective: moisturizers generally have no clear superiority over one another for eczema.125

What should sensitive skin watch for?

If you have eczema, test a new cream before applying it across your face. Apply a quarter sized amount to the inside of your arm every day for seven to ten days. If the skin stays clear, proceed with use. Fragrance free products are preferred for eczema, but fragrance is not the only ingredient that can trigger a reaction.6

If the cream causes burning, stinging or irritation, tell your dermatologist rather than continuing through discomfort. Persistent dryness despite moisturizing also deserves a dermatologist appointment. Dryness can have an underlying cause that needs treatment, and a moisturizer alone cannot address that cause.4
