What actually changed?
Start with the ingredient list on your original bottle. A precise comparison needs that label, rather than an assumption that every ingredient highlighted on the current bottle is newly added. The name has stayed familiar, which is convenient for the bottle and less convenient for the comparison.2
| What to compare | Your old bottle | Current Gentle Skin Cleanser |
|---|---|---|
| Highlighted ingredients | Check the original ingredient list to identify additions or removals. | Glycerin, niacinamide and panthenol. |
| Cleansing ingredient | Check the original label rather than assuming the cleansing system is unchanged. | Sodium cocoyl isethionate appears in the US, Canadian and UK lists. |
| Texture | Use your original bottle's description for a direct comparison. | Creamy and non foaming. |
| Intended skin type | Check the wording on the original bottle. | Normal to dry, sensitive skin. |
| Directions | Follow the directions printed on that bottle. | Can be used with or without water. |
The current US, Canadian and UK ingredient lists contain the same ten ingredient names, with water written as Aqua on the Canadian and UK labels. Their listed order differs: the Canadian list places sodium benzoate fourth, while the US and UK lists place panthenol fourth. Match the bottle sold in your country when checking a replacement.123
Is the new formula better for sensitive skin?
The current formula is built around cleansing while preserving the skin's moisture barrier, the protective layer that helps retain moisture. Glycerin attracts and retains water, niacinamide is vitamin B3 with hydrating properties, and panthenol is a form of vitamin B5 with soothing and moisturizing properties. The cleanser is intended to leave skin hydrated after washing, not to replace a moisturizer.3
UK customer reports include praise for the updated cleanser's moisturizing feel, but also redness, soreness and congestion after switching. Those experiences do not identify which ingredient caused a reaction. If your old bottle suited you, do not choose its replacement solely because the current one is marketed for sensitive skin.2
How do you use the current formula?
- 1Wet your face with lukewarm water.
- 2Apply the cleanser and massage gently using light pressure.
- 3Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.
- 4Apply a facial moisturizer while skin is still damp.
Cetaphil's current directions allow morning and evening use. For use without water, apply generously, rub gently and remove the excess with a soft cloth, leaving a thin film. Cetaphil recommends rinsing for regular daily cleansing and reserves the waterless method for situations where water is unavailable.3
The Canadian version carries a specific claim of hydration for 48 hours after cleansing when used without water. That is a hydration claim for that method, not a timetable for treating acne or comparing the old formula with the new one.1
Make sure you are comparing the same cleanser
Daily Facial Cleanser is a separate gel to foam product aimed at normal to oily skin, not an old version of Gentle Skin Cleanser. Gentle Cleansing Bar is another separate product, with a different ingredient list that includes masking fragrance. Cetaphil's similar cleanser names do not make the bottles interchangeable, however cooperative the shelf looks.45
