This comparison covers the US versions. Both names also appear in Canada's range, so check your local bottle rather than assuming the same name means the same formula.3

The US cap colours help distinguish the cleansers, because apparently two very similar names needed a colour department.1

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Gentle if dryness is your main concern or you prefer a creamy wash without foam.
  • Choose Daily if your skin is oily or combination and you prefer a foaming wash.
  • If your skin is sensitive, prioritise fragrance free cleansing. Gentle explicitly meets that preference; check the exact Daily formula before buying.
  • If acne treatment leaves your skin dry, Gentle is an option for supportive cleansing, not an acne treatment.
124

Dry skin is often flaky, itchy or rough. Oily skin looks shiny and feels greasy; combination skin has dry areas alongside oily ones. Tightness is another reason to favour hydrating cleansing. Use those signs to make the choice, rather than treating "Daily" as an instruction that the other bottle missed.56

Does Gentle have better ingredients?

Gentle contains glycerin, niacinamide, which is vitamin B3, and panthenol, which is vitamin B5. These support hydration and the skin's moisture barrier. That makes hydration a clear reason to choose Gentle, not a reason to rank every foaming cleanser below it. For an ingredient by ingredient comparison, check both current bottles, especially if fragrance affects your choice.2

How should you use them?

  1. 1Cleanse before applying other skincare and before bed. Keep washing to no more than twice daily, plus after sweating, to limit irritation.
  2. 2For Gentle with water, wet your face with lukewarm water, apply cleanser and massage lightly. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Follow the Daily bottle's own washing directions.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Oily skin needs moisturizer too.
  4. 4Include sun protection during the day. If using sunscreen, choose broad spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher.
25

Gentle also has a waterless option: apply liberally, rub gently and remove excess with a soft cloth, leaving a thin film. Cetaphil prefers rinsing for routine daily use and reserves wiping off for situations where water is unavailable. The remaining film is not a substitute for moisturizer.2

What if your skin is sensitive?

Introduce one new product at a time. For sensitive skin, try a small amount on a limited area before using it across your face. Avoid harsh scrubbing. Stinging or burning after product use can signal sensitivity; if your skin reacts to products, a dermatologist can help identify the problem and choose suitable skincare. For tweens and teens with dry or sensitive skin, washing once each evening can be sufficient.45

Do you need both?

Start with one cleanser suited to your skin rather than buying both as a routine. A simple routine can reduce costs, and using several products can increase irritation. Expensive products are not automatically more effective, so the bathroom shelf does not need a procurement department. Compare the same bottle sizes when checking prices; neither product gets a value advantage just from its name.5
