What is the difference over moisturizer?
| Feature | US Aquaphor Healing Ointment | A cream formulation, generally |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | 41% petrolatum; also contains panthenol and glycerin | Combines water and oil; check Cicaplast's exact label for ingredients |
| Role over moisturizer | An occlusive layer that reduces water loss | Adds moisturizing coverage with generally less occlusion than an ointment |
| Texture | Greasy, protective ointment | Generally lighter and more quickly absorbed |
| Best fit | Dry areas needing a more persistent protective layer | Broader application when a lighter finish is preferable |
Choose Aquaphor when the main job is keeping moisture from escaping from a very dry patch. Choose a cream when broad coverage and a lighter feel matter more. An ointment's greasy finish is part of its job, not a cosmetic plot twist. Aquaphor is fragrance free and preservative free, but its petrolatum percentage is not a score proving it works better than Cicaplast.12
How should you layer it?
- 1Wash gently with warm rather than hot water, then pat your skin dry without rubbing.
- 2Apply your usual fragrance free moisturizer while the skin is still damp. Applying moisturizer immediately after washing helps retain that moisture.
- 3If extra sealing is needed, apply Aquaphor over the moisturizer on the dry areas. This order applies the general principle of putting a protective occlusive layer over moisturized skin.
- 4For Cicaplast, follow the application directions on your exact product rather than borrowing Aquaphor's role in the routine.
Do you need an extra layer every night?
No. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night, while more severe dryness needs more frequent moisturizing. If your moisturizer already handles the dryness, another layer is not compulsory, despite the routine's apparent ambition to become a subscription service. Moisturizers can also be applied during the day whenever skin feels dry. In cold weather, moving to a heavier cream can be useful without changing every product you own.145
Expect moisture retention and protection rather than a fixed overnight repair deadline. Moisturizers have their greatest therapeutic effect during the first six hours after application, and regular application two to three times daily can be needed to maximize benefits. That is general moisturizer guidance, not a reason to coat your entire face with Aquaphor three times a day.1
Who should be careful?
Occlusive moisturizers can cause or aggravate acne, perioral dermatitis, and folliculitis, which is inflammation around hair follicles. A heavier seal is therefore not automatically the better choice for breakout prone areas. Neither a cream texture nor a fragrance free label promises freedom from irritation.13
If you use a prescription cream, check the layering plan before adding an ointment over it. Occlusion can increase absorption of topical medication. For prescribed topical steroids, general guidance is to apply the steroid to active areas, wait a few minutes, then apply the emollient; keep your prescriber's specific directions.3
Stop a product if contact dermatitis develops, meaning an inflammatory skin reaction to something touching the skin. Tell a dermatologist if products cause burning, stinging, or irritation. Seek help if dryness persists despite moisturizing; you do not need to wait until skin cracks or bleeds.145
