Which should you pick?

The deciding factors are how dry the skin is, whether the product irritates it, and whether the texture is comfortable enough to keep using. Compare the exact products rather than their names, because a repair themed name is not a texture specification. Ingredient lists, directions and prices need checking on the particular packs you are considering.3

Deciding factorCreamOintment
Degree of drynessSuitable for moderately dry skinGenerally preferred for very dry, scaly areas
Moisture retentionMore protective than a lotionMost effective at keeping moisture in
TextureA less oily option can be easier for daytime or facial useGreasier, which can make regular use less appealing

If both options feel comfortable and control the dryness, choose the less expensive one you will use consistently, rather than paying for a more impressive occupant of the bathroom shelf. If neither keeps very dry patches comfortable, consider a thicker emollient, meaning a moisturiser that softens skin and reduces water loss.13

How to use your chosen moisturiser

These are general emollient steps, not product specific Cicaplast or Cicalfate directions. Follow the directions on your exact product for its application frequency and permitted areas.5

  1. 1Wash your hands before applying the moisturiser.
  2. 2Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser instead of standard soap. Avoid hot water and prolonged bathing, which can worsen dryness.
  3. 3Gently pat the skin dry after washing, then apply the moisturiser while the skin is still damp.
  4. 4Smooth it over the dry areas in the direction of hair growth rather than rubbing vigorously. A thin, shiny layer is sufficient.
  5. 5Continue moisturising regularly. General emollient care often involves applying two to four times daily, including after bathing and whenever the skin becomes dry.

What should improve, and how quickly?

Emollients reduce water loss and help skin feel softer and smoother. Their effects are short lived, so regular application matters more than a single thick coating. There is no established number of days here for either named product to clear flakes. A tendency to dryness can persist, or improve once contributing factors such as harsh washing and a dry environment are controlled.13

When should you stop or get advice?

Do not keep applying a product that causes irritation; seek medical advice about an alternative. Emollients can cause burning, stinging or a rash, and rich products can aggravate acne or cause folliculitis, which is inflammation around hair follicles. A richer texture is useful for moisture retention, but it is not automatically the better choice for an acne prone face.245

Get the skin assessed if dryness becomes persistently itchy, inflamed or deeply cracked. Dry skin can develop dermatitis, meaning skin inflammation, and breaks in the surface can allow infection. Choosing between two moisturisers does not replace assessment of those changes.3

If you use a prescribed topical corticosteroid, keep it separate from your emollient by 30 minutes rather than applying both together. Applying them at the same time can dilute the steroid treatment.5
