What does a hydrocolloid patch actually do?

Hydrocolloid is a slightly gummy gel used in wound dressings. A pimple patch absorbs fluid, including pus and oil, and covers the spot to protect it from further picking. There is some evidence that patches can reduce the size and redness of closed pimples, but opened spots are the better match.1

Patches do not prevent new acne and offer little help for blackheads or deeper whiteheads. A patch is a spot dressing, not an acne prevention plan, which is a refreshingly small job description for a skincare product.1

How do you apply a patch?

What should you expect after removing it?

The blemish may look smaller and less inflamed after a wear period. Do not pop a pimple to give the patch something to absorb. Squeezing introduces bacteria, increases inflammation and can lead to scarring; squeezing a deep pimple can also increase discoloration, particularly in darker skin.145

Can sensitive skin use these patches?

Hydrocolloid patches are an option for sensitive skin, but adhesive sensitivity still matters. Avoid patches if their adhesive irritates your skin, and stop using a patch if the surrounding skin becomes irritated. Medicated patches containing benzoyl peroxide can be irritating, so an unmedicated patch is a more suitable option for some people with sensitive skin.14

What if the pimple is deep and painful?

A blind pimple is a bump deep beneath the skin without a visible whitehead or blackhead. A hydrocolloid patch can protect the area and discourage picking, but a closed, deep bump is not the strongest match for fluid absorption. Do not squeeze or massage it.4

For a deep, painful pimple, apply a clean, warm, damp washcloth for 10 to 15 minutes, three times daily. Use a clean washcloth each time. This helps the pimple move closer to the surface so it can heal; a hydrocolloid patch can also protect the skin and support healing.5

Inflamed acne can leave dark marks, and sun exposure increases that risk. Use shade, protective clothing and a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on uncovered skin. Look for sunscreen labelled noncomedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores.5
