Why Differin helps with closed comedones

A closed comedone forms when oil and dead skin cells plug a pore's opening. The bump does not need a visible white centre to be a whitehead. Comedonal acne means most of the blemishes are these blocked pores, often on the forehead and chin. Adapalene is a retinoid, a vitamin A related medicine, and retinoids are a first choice treatment for this acne pattern.134

The US Differin Gel discussed here contains 0.1% adapalene and is available without a prescription; follow your own pack if you have another formulation. Differin regulates skin cell turnover to help treat clogged pores and prevent new ones. Use it as a regular treatment, not just when a bump appears.2

How to use Differin

The routine has three jobs: cleanse, treat and moisturize, rather than audition every bottle in the bathroom.2

  1. 1Gently cleanse, then pat your face dry. Avoid abrasive cleansers and vigorous scrubbing.
  2. 2Spread a pea sized amount of Differin Gel in a thin layer over the full face, avoiding your eyes, lips and nostrils. Do not dab it only onto individual bumps.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer. During the day, use sunscreen to protect against the sun sensitivity associated with retinoids.
235

Differin directs once daily use, morning or evening, not both. Bedtime is a straightforward choice and matches general adapalene directions. Extra applications will not speed results and can irritate skin. If you miss a dose, skip it when the next dose is nearly due rather than doubling up.25

How long does it take?

Allow six to eight weeks before assessing whether treatment is helping. Differin advises consistent use for 12 weeks, and adapalene's full benefit can take eight to 12 weeks or longer. Previously unseen pimples can surface during the first few weeks, so an early increase in breakouts does not automatically mean treatment has failed. Comedonal acne often needs ongoing treatment to stay controlled.1256

What should the rest of your routine include?

Remove makeup at night and resist picking or squeezing whiteheads, which can cause more blemishes and scars. A benzoyl peroxide wash can also help by reducing acne bacteria. Ask a pharmacist about combining treatments rather than adding several irritating products at once.4567

Who should be careful?

Adapalene treats acne in adults and children aged 12 and older. Retinoids can cause dryness, peeling and irritation and can worsen eczema. Do not apply Differin to broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin. Discuss pregnancy, plans to become pregnant, breastfeeding and other medicines with your doctor before use. If you become pregnant while using adapalene, call your doctor.35

When should you get help?

Contact your doctor for burning, stinging or irritation; they can advise moisturizer or less frequent application. Stop using adapalene and seek urgent help for hives, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat. If bumps persist after six to eight weeks, a dermatologist can discuss prescription treatment or professional extraction. Seek help sooner for deep painful spots or scarring rather than relying on Differin alone.567
