Retinoids are a family of substances with vitamin A activity, and both retinol and adapalene belong to that family. Adapalene regulates skin cell turnover to keep pores from clogging and control inflammation. Retinol needs conversion into an active form, while adapalene is already active when applied. They are not interchangeable ingredients, and a percentage of one is not an equivalent dose of the other.3

Which should you choose?

If new blackheads, whiteheads or pimples keep appearing, Differin is the more appropriate choice for that job. If blemishes have cleared and healed but left marks and uneven texture, CeraVe is aimed at those remaining concerns. Choose by your goal, because the product names have already done enough competing.12

The distinction is not absolute: topical acne retinoids can also help lighten dark spots after acne and maintain clearer skin once breakouts are controlled. You do not automatically need a separate retinol serum just because you have both breakouts and dark marks. CeraVe targets the appearance of marks and smoother texture, so "resurfacing" does not require a bathroom renovation.24

How do you fit either into a routine?

  1. 1Wash gently and pat dry. Avoid scrubbing or abrasive cleansers.
  2. 2For Differin, spread a pea sized amount over the full face once daily. Differin allows morning or evening use, but not both; evening also fits common dermatologist directions for topical retinoids.
  3. 3For CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum, apply evenly across the face daily.
  4. 4Follow with moisturizer. If a prescribed retinoid routine irritates your skin, ask your dermatologist whether applying moisturizer first or changing frequency would help.
  5. 5During the day, use sunscreen with broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Add shade and protective clothing.

How long should you give Differin?

Acne treatment generally takes at least 6 to 8 weeks before fewer breakouts become visible. Adapalene can take 8 to 12 weeks or longer for its full benefit, and acne can worsen during the first few weeks. Differin advises consistent use for 12 weeks. Treat the whole area rather than using the gel only on individual pimples.145

Who should be careful with Differin?

Adapalene is used for acne in adults and children aged 12 and older. Do not apply it to sunburned, broken or eczema affected skin; keep it away from eyes, nose and mouth. Discuss pregnancy, plans for pregnancy or breastfeeding with your doctor, and call your doctor if you become pregnant while using it. Review your medicines and skincare products before adding it, including another retinoid. Harsh or drying products can increase irritation, and hot waxing should be avoided on treated areas.5

Dryness, redness, scaling and burning or stinging can occur, especially during the first 2 to 4 weeks. Talk to your doctor about irritation rather than increasing the amount or frequency. Stop using adapalene and seek immediate medical help for hives, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.5

See a doctor if acne is deep, painful, causing scars or not improving with treatment. Hot, swollen skin or acne affecting your mental health also warrants medical help rather than another serum purchase.6
