Which one fits your goal?

Differin targets clogged pores and inflammation, making it the more direct choice for blackheads, whiteheads and recurring breakouts. Retinol targets uneven tone and texture as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Choose by the concern you want to address, rather than asking your bathroom shelf to referee a brand rivalry.12

Retinol must be converted into its active form in the skin and supports collagen, the protein that helps keep skin firm. The Ordinary calls its 1% product "High Strength Age Support," which gives the bottle a job title but does not change the decision: retinol is the option aimed at signs of aging.24

How should you use them?

For Differin Gel:

  1. 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Do not scrub.
  2. 2Apply a pea sized amount in a thin layer over the full face, rather than only on individual pimples. Keep it away from eyes, nose and mouth.
  3. 3Use once daily, morning or evening, not both. Evening fits the usual bedtime directions for adapalene.
  4. 4Follow with moisturizer. During the day, use broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, plus shade and protective clothing.

For The Ordinary Retinol, start with a lower concentration and introduce it gradually. General retinoid guidance is to start every other night and build up slowly, with moisturizer and daytime sun protection. Follow your bottle's directions for the amount and layering order; a specific application amount for these formulas is not available here.23

How long before you see results?

Adapalene can take 8 to 12 weeks or longer for its full benefit. Acne can worsen during the first few weeks as previously unseen pimples reach the surface. Using more will not speed results. There is no verified results timeline here for The Ordinary's retinol formulas, so do not apply Differin's timetable to them.56

Who should be careful?

Do not use either retinoid during pregnancy. Ask a dermatologist before starting if you have skin allergies, substantial dryness, persistent redness, moderate or severe acne scarring, or acne linked to hormonal changes. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin, making a gradual start and moisturizer particularly useful.3

Adapalene is used for acne from age 12. Discuss prescriptions and other skin products with your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid applying Differin to sunburned, broken or eczema affected skin, and avoid hot waxing treated areas. Speak to your doctor about burning, stinging or irritation, especially if severe or persistent; they can advise on reducing use. Get urgent medical help for hives, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.5
