What gets through window glass?

Window glass blocks UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, but UVA rays can pass through. UVA contributes to wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer. Not getting sunburned beside your desk does not mean you have avoided sun damage. Sun damage builds up over time, so short exposures count too.12

How to protect your skin before work

  1. 1Choose broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, with water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB; SPF measures protection against UVB, not both types.
  2. 2Apply sunscreen to dry skin before your commute. Allow 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  3. 3Cover exposed skin generously, including your face, neck, ears and backs of your hands. Include an exposed scalp or hair part.
  4. 4Apply makeup after sunscreen. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher for your lips, and reapply it after eating or drinking.

Sunscreen goes under makeup, so foundation does not get promoted to head of sun protection. Moisturizers and cosmetics with SPF still need reapplication when you are outdoors.35

Do I have to reapply all day indoors?

Use the two hour schedule if your working day keeps you beside a window. If you spend the whole day indoors away from windows, reapplying every four to six hours is sufficient general guidance. That distinction is about sun exposure, not simply whether your workplace has a roof.1

Can window film help?

UV protective window film or tint is another option for home, office and car windows. Products carrying the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation must block at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. The Seal applies to individual products rather than whole brands, so a logo does not get to vouch for its entire extended family. Check the specific film or glass product rather than assuming every window provides the same protection.6

How do I reapply sunscreen during an outdoor work shift?

Reapply at least every two hours and after heavy sweating or getting out of water. Follow the bottle's directions as well. An outdoor shift also calls for protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat, UV protective sunglasses and shaded breaks. Ask your employer about shaded break areas or scheduling tasks when sun exposure is lower. Cloudy weather does not remove the risk.57

How do I protect my skin from sun on a long drive?

Apply sunscreen before setting off and include your ears, neck and hands, not just your face. Car windows can expose your ears to sunlight. For a long drive with continuing window exposure, use the same two hour reapplication schedule. UV protective film or tint can add protection, and sunglasses help protect your eyelids.136

Should I reapply sunscreen after a sweaty commute?

Yes, reapply after sweating rather than waiting for the next scheduled application. Sweat and water can make sunscreen wear off faster. Water resistant sunscreen is not sweatproof, and a higher SPF does not make sunscreen last longer between applications.45

Who needs extra care?

For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are recommended options. Some medicines, including doxycycline, certain diuretics and ibuprofen, increase sensitivity to sunlight. If you take one, be especially careful about sun exposure during your commute and outdoor work.57
