Unseen Face SPF 50, Body SPF 40, Stick SPF 40 and Lip Protector SPF 30 are different products, so check your own package for its SPF and directions. Supergoop sells several Unseen versions, so the name has managed to make an entire product collection sound like one tube.23
What protection does it give you?
Broad spectrum means protection against UVA and UVB, the two types of ultraviolet radiation. SPF measures protection against sunburn and mainly reflects UVB protection. SPF 50 offers greater sunburn protection than lower SPF values, but it does not mean you can stay outside 50 times longer. Sun strength, location and time of day affect your exposure.2
For choosing a sunscreen, dermatologists recommend broad spectrum coverage, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Those are useful checks for any Supergoop product you are considering. Water resistance lasts either 40 or 80 minutes, not indefinitely, and not every sunscreen has it.4
How do you use it so it works?
- 1Finish your skincare routine, then apply Unseen SPF 50 generously and evenly over your face and neck, 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- 2Cover all exposed skin. General dermatology guidance recommends at least 1 teaspoon for the face and about 1 ounce for an adult's exposed skin, with more needed depending on body size. Remember your ears, hairline, hands and tops of feet. Use an SPF lip balm for lips.
- 3If you wear makeup, Supergoop tells you to allow 30 seconds for Unseen SPF 50 to absorb before applying it.
- 4Reapply at least every two hours outdoors. Unseen SPF 50's directions also require reapplication after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying. General dermatology guidance advises reapplying immediately after swimming or sweating.
Use sunscreen before going outside even in winter or on cloudy days. Too little sunscreen, missed reapplication and expired products are common reasons people still get sunburned. Applying sunscreen only after you reach the sun leaves your skin unprotected while you wait for protection.5
What should Unseen feel like?
Supergoop describes Unseen SPF 50 as a scentless, weightless gel with a natural finish and no white cast. The clear gel doubles as a makeup primer, which is one less job vacancy on the bathroom shelf. You can also wear it without makeup.1
What can sunscreen not do?
No sunscreen blocks all UV radiation, and no sunscreen is waterproof. Combine sunscreen with shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses, and limit sun exposure especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. People of all skin colors can develop sun damage. If you take medication, ask your health care professional about sun precautions because some medicines increase sun sensitivity.6
When should you stop using it?
Do not apply Unseen SPF 50 to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes, rinse with water if it gets in them, and stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. Ask a doctor before using sunscreen on a baby under six months.12
Check the expiration date before using an older tube. Discard expired sunscreen; if there is no expiration date, discard it three years after purchase. If you cannot tell how old it is, replace it. Keep the container away from excessive heat and direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness, including while you are outside.2
