What makes it a good sunscreen?
PLAY Everyday Lotion meets the three main sunscreen selection criteria: broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA rays, which contribute to skin aging, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn. SPF describes sunburn protection, not how many hours you can spend outside. No sunscreen blocks all UV rays, so shade and protective clothing still belong in the plan.1345
Supergoop describes a lightweight, hydrating lotion that absorbs quickly without a white cast, which is more useful information than asking a sunscreen to have a personality. The brand markets it as suitable for normal, combination, dry and oily skin, and as noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores.1
Is PLAY a chemical or mineral sunscreen?
The US Everyday Lotion uses avobenzone 3%, homosalate 10%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 7.5%. These are chemical sunscreen filters, which absorb UV radiation. Chemical and mineral sunscreens can both provide effective protection; the category alone is not a reason to reject PLAY.156
Who should choose something else?
PLAY contains aromatic extracts and oils, including eucalyptus, orange, lemon and basil. It is not fragrance free. For sensitive skin, a fragrance free mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is a better starting point.15
Sunscreen reactions can come from the UV filters, fragrance or preservatives. If you have a known sunscreen allergy, avoid the specific ingredient you react to rather than guessing from the brand name. Repeated reactions deserve a dermatologist's assessment; patch testing can identify an allergy, and testing with light exposure can help investigate reactions that happen in sunlight.2
For infants under six months, prioritize shade and protective clothing and ask a doctor before using sunscreen. For babies and toddlers six months or older, dermatologists favor zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because these ingredients are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.45
How should you apply PLAY?
- 1Finish your skincare routine, then apply the lotion generously and evenly to your face and body.
- 2Apply to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors. General sunscreen guidance is about one ounce to cover an adult's exposed skin, with more needed for a larger body. Cover your ears, neck, hands and tops of feet.
- 3Supergoop tells you to allow 30 seconds for absorption. That does not replace the 15 minute wait before sun exposure.
- 4Reapply at least every two hours, after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, and immediately after towel drying.
Use sunscreen every day on uncovered skin when you will be outside, including cloudy days. Water resistance is not waterproofing: the protection needs renewing even when your skin stays dry. A higher SPF does not extend the reapplication interval.35
Keep PLAY out of your eyes and rinse with water if it gets in them. Do not apply it to broken or damaged skin. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash occurs.1
What about the FDA warning?
The August 2025 FDA warning concerned PLAY SPF 50 Body Mousse, not PLAY Everyday Lotion. The mousse lacked an approved application, and its foam format was not authorized under the rules allowing certain sunscreens to be sold without one. The FDA therefore classified the mousse as misbranded. PLAY is a shared product name, not a regulatory group discount. If you mean the mousse, choose a different sunscreen rather than treating the lotion's assessment as approval for it.7
Will an old bottle still protect you?
Keep sunscreen away from excessive heat and direct sunlight, including while you are outside. Replace it after its expiration date. If there is no expiration date, discard it three years after purchase; if you cannot remember how old it is, replace it.4
