Why apply it before going outside?
Starting to protect on application is different from getting the maximum benefit from your sunscreen. Advance application gives the sunscreen time to bind to your skin. General sunscreen instructions use different lead times: 15 minutes is common, while 30 minutes is also advised. For a longer outing with a risk of burning, applying once 30 minutes before leaving and again just before leaving is another practical approach. Treat immediate protection as a useful property, not a reason to skip your sunscreen's directions.234
How to apply mineral sunscreen
- 1Choose broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB, the two types of ultraviolet radiation that damage skin. For extended time outdoors, choose water resistant SPF 50 or higher.
- 2Apply before going outdoors, using the lead time on the label. Do this even on cloudy days and in winter.
- 3Cover exposed skin generously and evenly. Most adults need about one ounce to cover exposed body skin, with more needed for a larger body. For the face, use at least one teaspoon and rub it in thoroughly.
- 4Cover easily missed areas, including your ears, neck, hairline, hands and tops of your feet. Protect your lips with SPF 30 lip balm. Use a hat or sunscreen for an exposed scalp.
- 5Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after towel drying or if sunscreen has rubbed off, too.
Water resistant does not mean waterproof. Check whether the label lists 40 or 80 minutes of water resistance, and follow its reapplication directions. Keep the container away from excessive heat and direct sunlight, and replace expired sunscreen.2
Does mineral sunscreen work?
Yes. Mineral sunscreen uses zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both to protect against ultraviolet radiation. These filters primarily absorb UV radiation and scatter or reflect a smaller amount. The familiar description of mineral sunscreen as a shield that only reflects sunlight is incomplete. No sunscreen blocks all UV radiation.57
Mineral sunscreens often have a thicker texture than chemical sunscreens, which makes spreading them less of a formality. Some leave a white cast, which is not everyone's preferred interpretation of an invisible daily routine. Formulations designed to reduce that cast are available. Mineral sunscreen is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin, but that does not make every formula suitable for every person.1
Does sunscreen work?
Yes. Correct sunscreen use helps prevent sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer. Both mineral and chemical sunscreens can provide effective protection. The best sunscreen is one you will use consistently, rather than one that has been promoted to bathroom decoration. Burning despite sunscreen often means too little was applied, reapplication was missed or the product had expired. SPF is not a calculation of how many extra hours you can stay outside.236
Use shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses alongside sunscreen. Certain medicines increase sensitivity to sunlight and raise protection needs. Keep babies under six months out of direct sun and ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to them. If sunburn causes severe swelling, blisters or feeling unwell, seek medical help.234
