Mineral is a sunscreen category, not a request to turn your bathroom into a geology department. The distinction is the type of sun protecting ingredients, not whether the product comes as a cream, lotion or stick.1

How is mineral sunscreen different from chemical sunscreen?

TypeActive ingredientsHow it protects
MineralZinc oxide, titanium dioxide or bothMainly absorbs UV rays and also reflects sunlight.
ChemicalOther UV filters, such as avobenzoneAbsorbs UV rays.

All three types can protect effectively. Mineral sunscreen is a useful option for sensitive skin, but the category alone does not tell you the protection level. Look at the active ingredients to identify the type, then check the protection claims separately.1

What should you look for on the label?

Choose broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays; SPF mainly describes protection against UVB, the main cause of sunburn. No sunscreen blocks every UV ray, and you can still tan while wearing one.134

Will mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?

Mineral filters can leave visible white residue. Smaller mineral particles reduce that residue and make application easier. A tinted sunscreen that matches your skin tone can also help avoid a white cast. Tinted formulas containing iron oxide add protection against visible light, which can worsen dark spots, particularly in darker skin tones.12

How do you use mineral sunscreen?

  1. 1Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors. Use it every day you will be outside, including cloudy days.
  2. 2Cover all skin not covered by clothing. Most adults need about one ounce for exposed skin; use at least one teaspoon for your face.
  3. 3Cover easily missed areas, including your ears, neck, hands, hairline and tops of your feet. Avoid your eyes and mouth.
  4. 4Reapply approximately every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the bottle's directions. Water resistant labels specify 40 or 80 minutes of protection during swimming or sweating.

Use shade and protective clothing alongside sunscreen. For babies younger than six months, prioritize keeping them out of the sun and ask a doctor before applying sunscreen.13

Who should consider mineral sunscreen?

If you take isotretinoin, a prescription acne medicine, your skin can become more sensitive to sunlight. Mineral sunscreen can help accommodate sensitive skin during treatment.5

Mineral sunscreen is also an alternative for people with a confirmed allergy triggered by chemical sunscreen ingredients and sunlight. If sunscreen use followed by sun exposure brings an itchy rash, avoid the suspected product and seek assessment. A clinician can use photopatch testing to investigate this type of allergy.6

Does mineral powder count as sunscreen?

Most powder sunscreens use mineral filters, but a brush is not a shortcut around applying enough sunscreen. Powder requires a thick layer to deliver adequate protection and easily rubs off. Use a traditional cream or lotion as your main sunscreen; powder can serve as a touch up over makeup. Apply powder after serums and moisturizers. Fragrance or preservatives in powder formulas can irritate sensitive skin, so mineral does not mean every ingredient will suit you.7
