How to use PA++++ when choosing sunscreen
- 1Check for broad spectrum on the label. It means the sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into skin and contribute to skin aging; UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn. Both can raise skin cancer risk.
- 2Check the SPF separately and choose SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen does not make it safe to stay in the sun longer, and no sunscreen filters out all UVB rays.
- 3Apply sunscreen generously and evenly at least 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply at least every two hours, and sooner after swimming, sweating or toweling off. If you will be in water, choose a water resistant sunscreen and follow its label; US labels use 40 or 80 minutes for water resistance.
What does broad spectrum mean on sunscreen?
Broad spectrum means coverage against both UVA and UVB, a refreshingly plain phrase among sunscreen's plus signs and numbered ratings. It is the label clue that the product covers the UVA side as well as the UVB side. Sunscreen works alongside shade and sun protective clothing, not in place of them.2
