How do you check whether a face mask has expired?

  1. 1Read the packet or container for an expiration date and any storage or use directions.
  2. 2If no shelf life is listed, ask the manufacturer how long your particular mask remains usable. US cosmetic labels do not have to show an expiration date, so a blank space on the packet is not a lifetime membership.
  3. 3Check for changes in smell, colour or texture, separation, drying or cracking. Discard a mask that has deteriorated rather than applying it.
  4. 4Consider its storage history. Heat, sunlight, air and moisture can shorten the time a cosmetic stays usable.

If you cannot establish how old the mask is or whether it is still within its usable life, set it aside while you check with the manufacturer. Canadian cosmetic labels list ingredients, which also helps you identify substances you need to avoid. Read both the ingredient list and the directions before using a replacement; the product name alone does not tell you how to use the formula.12

Why do face masks expire?

Preservatives can break down, allowing bacteria and fungi to grow. Dipping fingers into a mask introduces microorganisms. Water and oil mixtures can separate, and products can dry out. Temperature changes, sunlight and air can alter colour, texture and smell. Bathroom moisture can make it easier for bacteria and fungi to grow, even before a product looks obviously different.1

Preservatives reduce microbial contamination and help cosmetics remain suitable during their shelf life and use. They are there to prevent spoilage, not just to keep the texture pleasant. Without preservatives, contamination can cause loss of performance and potentially irritation, infections or other adverse reactions. Preservatives undergo safety assessments and quality testing before use in cosmetics. A preservative in the ingredient list is therefore not, by itself, a reason to reject a mask. Its useful role is keeping the product from spoiling during its intended life.3

How can you keep a mask usable?

Keep containers and applicators clean, and follow the storage directions. Do not leave masks exposed to heat, such as in a hot car: heat can break down preservatives and speed microbial growth. Treat shelf life as a limit on expected quality and safety, not just appearance.1

What if the mask is in date but irritates your skin?

An in date mask can still irritate your skin because of its ingredients or how you use it. Test a new mask on small areas first. Follow its label for application time and frequency; leaving a mask on longer or using it too often can cause irritation. Gently apply the mask with your fingertips, and apply moisturizer after washing it off.4

Wash the mask off immediately if you feel itching, burning or stinging. These symptoms can signal irritation or an allergy, rather than tell you whether the mask has expired. If your skin feels worse after using a mask, see a dermatologist. Be especially careful about adding exfoliating masks when you already use retinol or acids, because overlapping ingredients can trigger dryness and irritation.4

A facial mask can boost hydration or help with a specific concern, but it cannot take over your daily routine, however managerial its packaging looks. Keep cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection in place, and do not use a facial mask as a replacement for acne or eczema treatment.4

What if you mean a protective face covering?

Protective face coverings are different from skincare masks: check their manufacturer designated shelf life on the label or packaging, or contact the manufacturer. Inspect them before use and discard masks with visible tears or degraded materials, including elastic. Wash reusable face masks after each use, and follow the manufacturer's instructions to determine whether a barrier face covering can be washed and worn again.5
