Test a new mask before using it on your face
For an at home product test, apply the normal amount to a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow. Repeat twice daily for seven to 10 days, leaving the product on only for its instructed contact time. Do not leave a rinse off mask on all day to test it. If the area becomes red, itchy or swollen, gently wash the product off and do not use it again. If no reaction develops during the testing period, you can start using the mask.2
How to apply and remove your mask
- 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and warm water to remove makeup, dirt and residue.
- 2Follow the mask's application directions. For a mask you spread onto your skin, apply it gently with your fingertips.
- 3Set a timer for the label's stated duration. Leaving a mask on longer than intended can cause irritation.
- 4Follow the product's removal instructions rather than assuming every mask needs washing off.
- 5Apply moisturizer after washing off the mask. Keep sunscreen as the final step of your morning routine.
Which mask should you choose?
For dryness, look for hyaluronic acid. Sheet masks tend to be hydrating, while cream masks often target concerns such as wrinkles or acne. For oily skin, clay helps absorb oil; salicylic acid is another ingredient to look for. Sensitive skin needs particular care with strong exfoliating ingredients. Choose a fragrance free formula. The ingredient list matters more than the theatrical packaging, which has never had to moisturize anything.13
How often should you use a mask?
Use the frequency on your mask's label rather than choosing a daily schedule automatically. Using masks too often can cause irritation, especially with exfoliating formulas. Avoid duplicating active ingredients already in your routine, particularly retinol or acids. If you use prescription or other medicines, check with your dermatologist before adding a mask: some medicines make skin more sensitive.13
What results should you expect?
A mask can give a temporary glow for an event, which is a smaller job than the packaging tends to suggest. Hydrating sheet masks can have an immediate effect, but that is not the same as a lasting change. Masks supplement cleansing, moisturizer and daily sunscreen; they do not replace treatment for acne or eczema.13
Can you use a homemade mask?
Safety depends on the ingredients. Avoid lemon juice, lime juice and apple cider vinegar because their acidity can irritate skin. Test a homemade mask on a small area before applying it widely. Expensive masks are not necessarily better, either, and unusual ingredients are not a reason to skip checking the formula.3
When should you stop and get help?
Itching, burning or stinging means you should wash the mask off immediately rather than wait for the timer. Stop using a product that causes a reaction. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help soothe the affected area. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and those measures do not relieve it, or if your skin feels worse after mask use. Persistent reactions can need medical patch testing to identify the ingredient responsible.12
