Should you use a face scrub or face mask first?

For a scrub and a rinse off moisturizing mask, a practical order is scrub, rinse, then mask, followed by moisturizer. This is general layering guidance, not a rule for every mask: follow the product's directions, especially if the mask stays on overnight. A mask supplements your regular routine rather than replacing it, even if the packaging gives it the confidence of an entire bathroom cabinet.12

How to apply them

  1. 1Check the mask's ingredients and directions first. Test a new mask on a small area before applying it to your whole face.
  2. 2Start with clean skin. Before a mask, use a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and residue. If your exfoliating product is also a cleanser, use it instead of adding a separate cleansing step.
  3. 3Apply the scrub gently in small circular motions for about 30 seconds. Rinse well with lukewarm water, not hot water.
  4. 4Apply the moisturizing mask gently with your fingertips. Leave it on only for the time stated on the label, then remove it as directed.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer after washing off the mask. In a morning routine, finish with sunscreen.

Is a scrub right for your skin?

A scrub physically removes dead cells from the skin's surface. Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin can find mechanical exfoliation too irritating; a mild chemical exfoliator, which dissolves dead cells, can be a better option. Oily, thicker skin can tolerate mechanical exfoliation better. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you have a darker skin tone or develop dark marks after acne, burns or insect bites, because it can increase pigmentation. Scrubbing harder is not a shortcut to better results, despite the product category sounding like a cleaning assignment.4

Which mask should you choose?

For hydration, look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides. Clay masks can absorb oil, but masks containing glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid also exfoliate, so leave out the scrub. Avoid fragrance, essential oils, rubbing alcohol and rough particles such as walnut shells or apricot kernels. Sensitive skin should also avoid strong exfoliating ingredients.1

How often should you use them?

There is no single scrub schedule for every skin type. Frequency depends on your skin and the exfoliation method; stronger exfoliation needs less frequent use. Follow the mask's label for frequency rather than automatically using it whenever you scrub. Prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can make skin sensitive or cause peeling, and exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts while you use them.14

What results can you expect?

A mask can give an immediate boost in hydration or appearance, but the effect can be temporary. Sheet masks tend to focus on hydration, while cream masks often target particular concerns. Neither format makes an expensive or unusual formula automatically better, which is inconvenient for a jar relying on its personality. For a homemade mask, avoid lemon juice, lime juice and apple cider vinegar because their acidity can irritate skin.3

When should you stop?

Never scrub sunburned skin, open cuts or wounds. Wash off a mask immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging. Stop products that cause irritation, and see a dermatologist if your skin feels worse after use. A mask cannot replace treatment for acne or eczema.124
