What order should you apply serum in?

  1. 1Cleanse gently. Use a gentle cleanser with lukewarm water, then pat your face dry rather than rubbing it. Remove makeup first if you are wearing it.
  2. 2Apply your serum. Put a thin serum on before a thicker moisturizer. General layering guidance runs from lightest to heaviest, so a rich cream should not go underneath a thin serum.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer. Moisturizer helps keep water from escaping your skin and is especially useful when your treatment causes dryness.
  4. 4Finish your morning skincare with sunscreen. Choose SPF 30 or higher. Apply makeup afterward if you want to wear it.

If you use a prescribed skin medicine, its directions take priority over a generic serum routine. Skin medication or treatment generally goes directly after cleansing, before moisturizer and sunscreen. Product order affects how well products work, so the bathroom shelf is not an application schedule.4

Test a new serum before using it on your face

For an at home skin test, apply the product to a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow. Choose somewhere the serum will not be rubbed or washed away. Use the amount and thickness you would normally apply, twice daily for seven to 10 days, and leave it on for its usual duration. If you have no redness, itching or swelling, you can start using the product on your face.5

If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve the skin. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe or those measures do not help. Persistent uncertainty about the trigger can call for medical patch testing, which helps identify an ingredient allergy.5

Should you use serum morning or night?

An antioxidant serum is an optional morning step, not a requirement. Vitamin C helps protect against damaging environmental molecules called free radicals and can support collagen production. Vitamin E can help skin retain moisture. Vitamin C also complements sunscreen; it does not replace sun protection.12

For retinol, a vitamin A derivative, use nighttime rather than treating every serum as a morning product. General retinoid guidance is to begin every third night and increase toward nightly use as your skin tolerates it. Watch for redness, significant peeling or irritation rather than increasing automatically. Regular use can improve wrinkles, sun spots and skin texture.3

Can you use several serums together?

Start with one serum at a time and introduce new products individually. Mixing vitamin C with chemical exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids can disrupt skin's pH balance. More products increase the chance of dryness and irritation, not the routine's qualifications. Avoid heavily fragranced formulas, particularly if your skin is sensitive.1

Choose ingredients for your skin type and goal rather than the price tag or the claims on the bottle. Expensive products are not necessarily more helpful, so the receipt is not a skincare credential. A basic routine can consist of cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen without a serum.12
