Retinol is a vitamin A ingredient, whereas serum and oil describe product formats, so matching bottles do not mean matching jobs. Compare the ingredients and intended use rather than treating the dropper as a qualification.23

Which should you choose?

For mild acne, mild pigmentation changes or fine lines, retinol is the more relevant choice. For dry skin, an oil can support the skin barrier, but a moisturizer is also an option. Neither category earns a place in your routine just because it comes with a dropper.12

If you are considering vitamin E oil specifically, dry, flaky skin is more likely to benefit than oily, acne prone skin. Vitamin E helps retain moisture and soften skin, but it cannot make wrinkles disappear. A moisturizer containing vitamin E is another way to use it; labels commonly call the ingredient tocopherol or tocotrienol.4

How do you start a retinol serum?

  1. 1Test a little on a small area first. Wait a couple of days; do not proceed if the patch becomes very red or itchy.
  2. 2At bedtime, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Follow the package directions. General guidance is a pea sized amount in a thin layer over the face, avoiding the eyes, mouth and nose.
  4. 4Start every other night, or once every few days if needed, and increase gradually as tolerated.
  5. 5Finish with a noncomedogenic moisturizer, meaning one designed not to clog pores. Use sunscreen during the day, seek shade and cover exposed skin.

An oil is not a required companion to retinol: moisturizer is the standard finishing step. If you want to add an oil, check its ingredients and intended use rather than assuming every oil belongs in the same place in a routine.25

What results and side effects should you expect?

Retinol takes several weeks to produce visible improvement; changes in wrinkles usually take several months. Dryness, peeling, redness, itching and burning can occur. Face oils work through moisture retention, not retinol's cell turnover mechanism. Many oils can block pores, and strongly fragranced oils such as lavender or tea tree can irritate skin or cause allergic reactions.23

Who should be careful?

Avoid retinoids during pregnancy, and discuss retinol with your healthcare provider while breastfeeding. Retinoids can worsen eczema through drying. Sensitive, allergy prone or already inflamed skin needs particular caution; irritation can also trigger dark marks in darker skin. Face oils are best avoided with acne prone skin, rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that causes itchy, flaky patches.1236

See a doctor if acne is not improving with self treatment, or if spots are deep, painful or causing scars. Prescription retinoids are a separate treatment choice, not simply another serum to select by texture.7
