What should I check before buying a shower filter?
Look for results showing a reduction in water hardness, rather than a general claim about cleaner water. Hardness is about dissolved minerals, so the useful question is whether the device reduces them in the water reaching your shower. For hardness, "filtered" is a description rather than a result, however impressive the adjective looks on the box. Whether a particular shower filter achieves that remains a product specific question.2
Would softer water help my skin?
Hard water can make dry skin drier and increases skin pH. It also interacts with soap, making lather harder to achieve and leaving a soap film on skin. Hard water washing has been linked to greater deposits of the cleansing agent sodium lauryl sulfate, increased water loss through skin and irritation.23
The link with eczema needs a narrower reading. In adults aged 40 to 69, harder domestic water was associated with more existing eczema, but not more newly developed eczema during follow up. Eczema has no single cause. Softer water should not be treated as an eczema cure or a replacement for prescribed care.23
Should I change my cleanser if I have hard water?
If your skin is dry, a gentle cleanser without soap is a sensible choice. Keep showers or baths brief and avoid very hot water; a brief wash once a day is enough for dry skin unless your doctor gives different instructions. Use an emollient, a moisturizer that helps skin retain moisture, regularly. Stop using a cleanser that causes stinging or itching rather than assuming the tap water is the only problem.3
Some baby cleansers can bind free calcium in bath water and reduce its effective hardness. That finding concerns cleanser mixed into a simulated bath, not a shower filter or every facial cleanser. Choose a cleanser for gentle cleaning rather than a promise to fix your water supply, because the bathroom does not need a second utilities department.1
Is filtered water better than tap water for washing my face?
Not automatically. If hardness is the concern, the relevant difference is mineral content, not whether the water has passed through a filter. Reducing hardness could address that particular exposure, but a better skin outcome is not settled. Keep the washing routine gentle too: frequent washing, very hot water and soap can all worsen dryness independently of water hardness.23
Should I rinse off micellar water if my tap water is hard?
Hard tap water is not a reason to add a rinse to a micellar water designed to stay on. Micellar water typically does not need rinsing and can be used in the morning, evening or both. CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water, for example, has explicit directions saying no rinse is needed. Follow your own product's directions.45
Apply micellar water with your hands, a cotton pad or a reusable microfiber cloth, and gently massage it over your face. For sunscreen or cosmetics, follow with a gentle cleanser; heavy or waterproof makeup can need additional cleansing. Finish with moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen. Avoiding a tap water rinse should not mean leaving products inadequately removed.4
