Which micellar water should you choose?

Look for a gentle, fragrance free formula. Added fragrance can trigger irritation or allergic reactions, particularly on sensitive skin. An expensive or entertaining product is not necessarily better for a child's skin.2

Some micellar waters are specifically made for babies. For example, Bioderma's US ABCDerm H2O is labelled suitable from birth for babies and children with normal skin. It contains fragrance, so a baby label does not automatically mean fragrance free. Check the ingredients on the bottle, because formulas can change.1

What does micellar water actually do?

Micelles are tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that lift away dirt, oil and makeup. Expect cleaning during use, not an acne treatment. Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional cleanser, which is more commitment than the word 'water' suggests.3

How should kids use it?

  1. 1Introduce only one new product at a time. For sensitive skin, try a small amount on a small area before using it across the face.
  2. 2Apply micellar water to a cotton pad or reusable microfiber cloth, following the bottle's directions.
  3. 3Clean gently without scrubbing. For ABCDerm H2O, Bioderma directs you to repeat until the cotton pad stays clean, then dry gently.
  4. 4Check whether rinsing is required. Micellar water usually needs no rinse, and ABCDerm H2O specifically does not. When removing sunscreen or cosmetics, follow with a gentle cleanser.
  5. 5Finish with a fragrance free moisturizer. For tweens, use broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen each morning.

For tweens with dry or sensitive skin, cleansing once daily in the evening can be enough. Others wash twice daily. Micellar water belongs in the cleansing step, not as an extra layer after another cleanser, which keeps a scientific sounding name from creating a second washing appointment. Babies' products can have different directions: ABCDerm H2O allows daily use as often as needed, including quick cleanup after meals.123

What if your child has eczema or reacts to it?

For childhood eczema, use cleanser only when needed and choose a mild, fragrance free formula. Bioderma directs children with atopic prone skin toward its Atoderm range rather than ABCDerm. A micellar water's general suitability for sensitive skin is not a reason to ignore the individual formula.14

Stop using a new product if it causes redness, burning or peeling. If your child's skin is reacting to skincare products, see a dermatologist for help choosing suitable products. Micellar water does not replace prescribed eczema medicine; use that medicine as directed and apply moisturizer over it.24
