What should the label say?

Fragrance is a common cause of contact dermatitis, an itchy and sometimes painful reaction to something touching your skin. "Unscented" can mean that fragrance has been covered up rather than removed. If fragrance is what you need to avoid, the words "fragrance free" are the useful distinction.3

Which option should you choose?

Micellar waterUseful differencesDirections
Bioderma Sensibio H2OFormulated for sensitive skin; cleanses and removes makeup.Gently sweep over skin without rubbing. No rinsing required.
CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water, US formulaContains three ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.Saturate a cotton pad and gently wipe. No rinsing required.

Sensibio H2O is a straightforward choice if your priority is a fragrance free cleanser formulated for sensitive skin. CeraVe is an option if you also want those hydrating ingredients in your cleansing step. Neither choice replaces the moisturizer that follows cleansing.156

Follow your own bottle's directions: the US CeraVe product says to saturate a pad and wipe gently, while the version on CeraVe's Africa site also says to shake first. Those versions have different ingredient lists.57

What does micellar water actually do?

Micellar water contains micelles, tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that attract and lift away dirt, oil and makeup. The liquid feels lightweight, much like water, and cleans without stripping away much of your skin's natural oils.6

You can use micellar water without wearing makeup, because dirt does not check whether you bothered with foundation. Cleansing also removes sweat, excess oil and pollution residues.4

How do you use it?

  1. 1Apply micellar water to a cotton pad or reusable cleansing pad, following the amount and preparation directions on your bottle.
  2. 2Gently sweep the pad over your face without scrubbing.
  3. 3If you are removing sunscreen or cosmetics, follow with a gentle cleanser. Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional cleansing step.
  4. 4Continue with your usual treatments and moisturizer. Apply sunscreen in the morning.
46

You can use micellar water in the morning, evening or both; morning and evening cleansing is usually sufficient. Bioderma Sensibio H2O and CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water do not require rinsing. A cotton pad is only one application option, not a subscription you owe your cleanser. Reusable cotton or microfiber pads are alternatives.45

If you double cleanse in the evening, fragrance free micellar water can replace an oil cleanser as the first step, followed by a water based face wash. Double cleansing is optional, not a requirement for every skin type.2

What should you expect, and when should you stop?

Expect cleansing during use, not an acne treatment or wrinkle treatment over time. Micellar water is a gentle option for dry and sensitive skin, but removing fragrance does not remove every possible trigger: other ingredients can also cause a reaction, especially around the delicate eye area.36

If a new micellar water seems to cause an itchy or painful rash, stop using it. If avoiding the suspected product does not help you identify the cause, a dermatologist can help investigate.3
