Is it a scar or a leftover mark?
A flat patch after acne is often post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, meaning extra color left after inflammation. A true acne scar changes the skin's surface: it leaves an indentation or raised tissue. Both can come with discoloration. A scar can lose its color without losing its dent, so 'faded' and 'gone' are not synonyms with better marketing.1
| What you notice | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Flat color with no indentation or raised tissue | A leftover pigment mark rather than an acne scar. |
| Narrow, deep holes | Ice pick scars. |
| Indentations with sharp edges | Boxcar scars. |
| Sloping indentations and a wavy surface | Rolling scars. |
| Raised, firm tissue | A hypertrophic scar stays within the original area; a keloid grows beyond it. |
How long does fading take?
Scar fading can take up to two years or more. That is a general scar healing timeline, not a deadline for acne pits to disappear. Discoloration around an acne scar usually fades while the texture change remains. Depressed acne scars can also become more noticeable with age as skin loses collagen, the protein that helps support skin, and elasticity.134
What should you do now?
- 1Treat ongoing acne first. Preventing new breakouts helps prevent new scars, and acne medicines can interfere with scar treatments.
- 2Wash gently twice a day and remove makeup at night. Do not scrub, pick, squeeze or scratch spots.
- 3Protect scars from the sun with sunscreen of SPF 30 or more. Keep scars covered in sunlight where possible for at least a year.
- 4Arrange a dermatologist appointment if you have lasting pits, raised scars or new scarring. A skin examination can identify the scar types and guide treatment.
What treatments can improve acne scars?
Treatment aims to make scars less noticeable, not promise complete removal. Chemical peels and dermabrasion remove surface layers of skin. Laser resurfacing and microneedling stimulate collagen repair. Fillers lift depressed scars, while steroid injections can flatten raised scars. More than one procedure or repeat sessions are sometimes needed because different scars need different approaches.24
Ask about risks before choosing a procedure, especially if you have dark skin: laser treatments can cause skin darkening or lightening. Silicone gels or dressings are another option for some scars; choose treatment by scar type rather than treating every mark alike. Skin camouflage creams and powders cover scars rather than remove them, which gives them a less ambitious job description than 'erasing'.34
When should you see a doctor?
Get medical help for deep, painful acne, breakouts causing scars, or acne that is not improving with treatment. You can also seek treatment if scars hurt, bother you or affect your mental health. Get prompt medical assessment if a scar becomes swollen, warm or painful, or releases pus.35
Does acne go away?
Acne often responds well to treatment, but improvement can take six to eight weeks and flare ups can return. Clearing breakouts does not automatically clear existing scars. Newborn acne that starts between birth and six weeks usually clears without treatment; acne beginning later in childhood needs a dermatologist's assessment.167
Does acne go away with age?
Acne usually goes away after the teenage years, but it can last into middle age. Waiting to outgrow acne is not a good plan if breakouts are leaving scars: untreated severe acne can cause scarring, and early treatment helps reduce that risk.16
