Does lanolin alcohol count as lanolin?
For lanolin avoidance, yes. Lanolin is a mixture obtained from sheep's fleece, and lanolin alcohol is one of its components. The free alcohols are considered the main substances responsible for allergic sensitisation, which means developing an allergy after exposure. The longer ingredient name is not a reason to treat Aquaphor Healing Ointment as free of lanolin. Other names to watch for include wool alcohols, wool fat, wool wax, anhydrous lanolin and Amerchol.2
How does lanolin compare with Aquaphor?
| What you are comparing | Lanolin | US Aquaphor Healing Ointment |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A fatty substance derived from sheep's fleece | A formulated skin protectant ointment |
| Composition | A complex mixture of waxes and other components | 41% petrolatum plus six inactive ingredients, including lanolin alcohol |
| Moisture support | Helps maintain moisture and support the lipid barrier on intact skin | Forms a protective barrier that helps skin retain moisture |
| Lanolin avoidance | Not suitable when lanolin is an identified allergen | Not a substitute for someone avoiding lanolin |
Aquaphor is not pure lanolin, and the two are not interchangeable formulas. Aquaphor Healing Ointment is an option for protecting and relieving dry, chapped skin when lanolin avoidance is not needed. Lanolin itself also has moisturising properties, but damaged or inflamed skin can respond differently from intact skin. Neither choice solves a known lanolin allergy.35
What does Aquaphor have in it?
US Aquaphor Healing Ointment contains 41% petrolatum as its active skin protectant. Its inactive ingredients are mineral oil, ceresin, lanolin alcohol, panthenol, glycerin and bisabolol. The ointment is free of fragrances, preservatives and dyes. It helps attract and retain water, soften skin and reduce moisture loss. Aquaphor forms a protective barrier to help skin retain moisture, which is useful work despite the lack of a dramatic skincare reveal.14
Aquaphor updates ingredients regularly, and website lists can differ from product packaging. Use the ingredient list on the package you are buying rather than assuming every product with the Aquaphor name has this formula. Aquaphor tells you to check your own packaging, giving the jar a job beyond being recognisable on a shelf.5
How should you test it before using it?
If you do not have a known lanolin allergy, a small area test can help predict a reaction before wider use. This is general skincare guidance, not a diagnostic allergy test.6
- 1Choose a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or inside your elbow, where the ointment will not be washed or rubbed away.
- 2Apply your normal amount and thickness twice daily for seven to 10 days. Leave the ointment on as you normally would.
- 3If no redness, itching or swelling develops, proceed to normal use. If a reaction develops, gently wash the ointment off and do not use it again.
How often can you apply it?
Apply Aquaphor Healing Ointment as needed to dry or chapped areas, including lips, hands and feet. There is no fixed morning or evening schedule. Keep it out of your eyes. Do not apply it to open, bleeding or wet wounds, deep or puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns.14
What reaction should you watch for?
Lanolin contact allergy can cause redness, itching, swelling or blistering hours to days after application, even after previous use without trouble. People with eczema or damaged skin have a higher risk of sensitisation. A dermatologist can investigate suspected allergy with medical patch testing. Seek help for a severe reaction. Stop using Aquaphor and ask a doctor if the condition worsens, lasts more than seven days, or clears and returns within a few days.126
