Spreading a product is different from absorption

A cream can be spread across the skin during application. Absorption means an ingredient passes into or through the skin where the product is applied. Those are different processes. How far bakuchiol moves beyond the application area, and whether it produces benefits in untreated facial areas, remain uncertain.1

As general guidance for topical products, cover the area you intend to treat directly. If you want to leave a nearby area untreated, avoid smoothing your bakuchiol product across it when applying the rest of your routine. A spot application is not a whole face routine, however ambitious the bottle sounds.1

Does the formula affect absorption?

Yes. A topical product contains an active ingredient and a base, sometimes called a vehicle. The base and other ingredients influence how much of the active ingredient enters the skin. Skin thickness, the condition of the skin barrier, concentration and covering the application area also affect absorption. A higher concentration can increase penetration; it is not a reason to expect treatment of a wider area.1

Bakuchiol has several studied actions, including antioxidant activity and effects on proteins that support skin structure. The word "multidirectional" describes several kinds of activity, not a serum taking a tour of your face. Local application is the practical starting point: bakuchiol formulations have produced changes in treated skin, including increased fibronectin, a protein that helps support skin structure, after four weeks.2

How should you apply bakuchiol?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat it dry.
  2. 2Apply your bakuchiol serum to the intended area before moisturizer. If bakuchiol is in a cream, apply that cream after other serums.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer and sunscreen as appropriate, followed by makeup if you use it.

Bakuchiol can be used once or twice daily. For twice daily use, apply it in the morning and evening. Continue wearing sunscreen. Avoid adding several other products intended to address signs of aging at the same time, because using too many can irritate skin.34

What should you expect in the treated area?

One serum combining supramolecular bakuchiol with Terminalia chebula extract improved wrinkle measurements and redness after 28 days of twice daily application in 34 people with sensitive skin. That timeline is specific to the combined formula. There is no established timetable for benefits appearing elsewhere on the face after a spot application.5

What if irritation appears somewhere else?

Bakuchiol is generally gentler than retinol, but irritation and allergic reactions are still possible. Irritation elsewhere does not tell you how far an ingredient has travelled. Get advice from a dermatologist if you are concerned about a reaction, particularly if you also use other active products or have a skin condition. During pregnancy, speak to your healthcare provider before using bakuchiol because its safety remains uncertain.4
