Moisturizing is not the same as growing lashes
Castor oil can help skin retain moisture. That is a different job from making hair grow, so its moisturizing properties are not a reason to expect longer or fuller lashes. Castor oil has attracted hair growth claims on social media, where repetition does a remarkably good impression of proof.1
There is no proven castor oil schedule for eyelash growth: no established amount, frequency or number of weeks to results. A confident growth claim does not become a calendar appointment just because someone adds "nightly".1
Can you use castor oil on your eyelashes?
Skip pure castor oil as a home eyelash growth treatment. Applying it to skin can cause irritation or contact dermatitis, an allergic skin reaction. Putting it in the eyes can cause burning, pain, redness, blurred vision and even eye damage. Do not put ordinary castor oil directly into your eyes.1
Stop using castor oil if you develop skin irritation or a rash. If you experience eye pain, blurred vision or other eye problems after using it, seek assessment from an eye care specialist rather than trying another home remedy.1
What if your eyelashes are falling out?
Lash loss accompanied by itchy, red, swollen or crusty eyelids deserves an eye exam. Blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelids, can cause eyelashes to fall out or grow in the wrong direction. Burning, watery eyes and crusts around the lashes on waking are other common symptoms. An eye doctor can examine your eyes, eyelids and lashes to identify the problem.2
If blepharitis is the cause, treatment focuses on keeping eyelids clean and free of crusts, not stimulating lash growth with oil. Daily eyelid cleaning and warm compresses help manage the condition. An eye doctor can advise whether eye drops or medicines that fight infection are needed. Blepharitis usually requires ongoing care rather than a short course of treatment.2
