Why is Differin called a retinoid?
Retinoid is the umbrella term for ingredients with vitamin A activity. Retinol is one member of that family, commonly used in cosmetic products to improve uneven tone, pigmentation and texture. Adapalene is another member, used as an acne medication. The US 0.1% Differin Gel is available without a prescription; other adapalene formulations are available by prescription.123
Differin helps regulate skin cell turnover, keeping pores from clogging, and reduces inflammation associated with acne. Its purpose is to treat acne and help prevent new breakouts, rather than run a customer service desk for each new pimple. Choose it for that acne treatment role, rather than assuming it is interchangeable with a cosmetic retinol.1
How do you use Differin Gel?
- 1Wash with a gentle, non drying cleanser, then pat your skin dry.
- 2Apply a pea sized amount in a thin layer over the full face, rather than using it only on individual pimples.
- 3Follow with a moisturizer. Use Differin once daily, morning or evening, not both.
- 4During the day, protect exposed skin with sunscreen offering broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. If applying Differin in the morning, let it dry before sunscreen.
Avoid combining Differin with salicylic acid, glycolic acid or other alpha hydroxy acids, which can worsen irritation. Do not wax areas where you apply it. If you already have a prescribed acne routine, follow your dermatologist's instructions rather than adding treatments yourself.34
How long does it take to work?
Give Differin 12 weeks of consistent use to assess the result. General acne treatment guidance puts the wait for fewer breakouts at least six to eight weeks. Applying extra gel will not speed up clearing. Continued use helps prevent future breakouts even after acne improves, so clearer skin is not a resignation letter for the tube.134
Who should be careful?
Dryness, redness, scaling and burning or stinging can occur during the adjustment period. Irritation usually peaks around weeks two to four and then eases. A gentle cleanser and moisturizer can help. Stop using Differin and speak to a doctor before restarting if irritation becomes severe or persists. A dermatologist can advise whether to change the amount, frequency or moisturizer order.34
Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Ask a dermatologist before starting if you have skin allergies, substantial dryness or persistent redness and inflammation. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin, so watch for it rather than pushing through. Acne linked to hormonal changes or accompanied by moderate or severe scarring also warrants a dermatologist's assessment.2
