Both belong to the retinoid family of vitamin A based skin treatments. Retinoid is the family name, not a separate contestant in the comparison, however crowded the skincare aisle looks. Choose a low strength retinol formula to start rather than chasing intensity. There is no single price comparison across these different products; compare the specific options you are considering.1

What does retinol do for aging skin?

Retinol helps old surface cells shed and increases collagen production. Collagen is the protein that gives skin structure and support. These changes can soften the appearance of fine lines and improve texture. Retinoids can also partly improve photoaging, meaning skin changes caused by repeated ultraviolet exposure. They do not entirely prevent wrinkles, and treating normal aging is optional.2456

Allow about three months of regular retinol use to start seeing improvements. Wrinkle changes generally take several months, and fading dark spots can also take months. Dryness, peeling and redness can appear before the benefits. Increasing the amount is not a useful shortcut.234

Does adapalene help with skin aging?

Adapalene prevents pimples from forming beneath the skin. Do not assume its acne benefits translate into the same wrinkle results as retinol. If you want adapalene specifically for aging rather than acne, discuss that use with a dermatologist. Its usual timeline of 8 to 12 weeks or longer refers to acne improvement, not wrinkle reduction.3

What does retinol cream do for aging skin?

Retinol cream delivers retinol in a cream format, with the same ingredient goals of improving fine lines and texture. A cream describes the format, not a promotion to a more powerful ingredient. A moisturizing formula can also temporarily make fine lines look less noticeable through hydration. If you already use a retinol serum, avoid duplicating retinol in your moisturizer.24

How should you start?

  1. 1Patch test retinol on a small area and wait a couple of days to check for redness or itching.
  2. 2At bedtime, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. Avoid scrubbing.
  3. 3For retinol, apply a pea sized amount in a thin layer, avoiding your eyes, nose and mouth. Begin every other night. For adapalene, follow its own directions and cover the affected area rather than individual pimples.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer afterward. With retinol, a thin layer of moisturizer beforehand is another option if irritation is a problem.
  5. 5Each morning, apply moisturizer followed by broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Use shade and protective clothing too.

Who should be careful?

Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Ask your clinician before starting if you have significant dryness, skin allergies or persistent redness. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin. Discuss existing medicines and skincare before adding adapalene, and avoid harsh or drying products. Do not apply adapalene to sunburned, broken or eczema affected skin, or wax the treated area.13

Stop a product that causes skin irritation and arrange a dermatologist appointment. With adapalene, seek medical advice for severe or persistent redness, scaling, burning or pain. Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.37
