What happens when retinol gets old?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that is particularly sensitive to light and oxygen. As retinol degrades, less of the original ingredient remains. Antioxidants and encapsulation, which encloses retinol in protective structures, can improve stability, but neither makes retinol last indefinitely. The finished formula matters, so there is no single shelf life that applies to every serum or cream. The rest of the cosmetic can change separately. Water and oil mixtures can separate, products can dry out, and preservatives can break down, allowing bacteria and fungi to grow. An ageing product therefore raises two different questions: how much retinol remains, and whether the formula is still suitable to use.12
How do you know when to replace it?
- 1Look for a printed expiry date on the bottle or box and follow it.
- 2Check for an open jar symbol with a number followed by M. The number means how many months the cosmetic should last after opening; it is not a date measured from purchase.
- 3Record the date you first open the product so you can follow that limit.
- 4Check for changes before using it. Replace a product that has developed an unusual smell, changed colour, separated, or become unexpectedly dry, flaky or runny.
- 5If there is no date or opening limit, ask the manufacturer how long that specific formula lasts and how it should be stored.
Writing down the opening date gives you something more useful than a vague memory of buying skincare during an optimistic week. In the United States, cosmetic products do not have to carry an expiry date or an opening symbol, so an unmarked bottle is not evidence of an unlimited shelf life.23
Does retinol expire if unopened?
Yes. Opening is not the only thing that affects shelf life: the formula, storage conditions and time matter too. An unopened bottle is still getting older, even if it has spent its life waiting for a more organised routine. Keeping the seal intact avoids contamination from dipping fingers into the product, but it does not stop chemical degradation. Use the printed expiry date where one exists; the open jar symbol describes use after opening, not how long a sealed bottle can sit in a drawer.23
How should you store retinol?
Follow the product's storage instructions. General cosmetic storage guidance is to use a clean, dry space at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and secure the cap after every use. Avoid hot cars and damp storage areas. Heat can weaken preservatives, while moisture can encourage microbial growth. Keep containers and applicators clean. Do not assume refrigeration is required for every finished retinol product; use the manufacturer's instructions for your formula.23
What if you mean prescription tretinoin?
Cosmetic retinol and prescription tretinoin are different vitamin A compounds. For tretinoin or another retinoid medicine, follow the medicine's printed expiry date and labelled storage conditions. Drug expiry dates describe the period during which strength, quality and purity remain stable under those conditions. Do not extend that date yourself because the tube is unopened or still looks normal.45
