Very fair skin that burns but does not tan will usually peel and return to its previous colour. Skin that naturally tans more easily can darken after a burn. Darker skin is less prone to burning, but even dark and black skin can burn.13

What's the difference between sunburn and a tan?

What happensSunburnUV tan
Skin responseUV damages skin cells and triggers inflammation.Skin produces more melanin in an attempt to protect against further damage.
Visible or felt changesWarmth, tenderness, pain and redness, sometimes followed by blisters or peeling.Skin becomes darker.
MeaningSkin damage from excessive UV exposure.A pigment response to UV damage, not healthy colour.
23

Sunburn redness comes from increased blood flow to damaged skin. Tanning comes from increased pigment. The same exposure can trigger both responses, so redness fading while skin darkens does not mean the burn itself has become protective. A base tan will not prevent another sunburn.24

How long does the colour change take?

Pigment can start darkening skin within 48 hours of UV exposure. A burn can take one to two weeks to heal and darken, depending on its severity and your skin type. These are different timelines: pigment can develop while the burn is still healing. Blistering burns often take longer and can need medical attention.12

Peeling commonly starts around four to seven days after exposure. As damaged skin sheds, the area can look pinker or darker while its protective barrier rebuilds. That colour is not necessarily an even tan. Peeled skin can remain sensitive to sunlight for several weeks.15

What should you do while the burn heals?

  1. 1Protect the burned area from further sun exposure. Do not try to deepen the colour outdoors or in a tanning bed.
  2. 2Cool the skin with a cool shower, bath or clean, wet cloth.
  3. 3Apply moisturizing cream to skin that is not blistered. Aloe vera can help soothe discomfort.
  4. 4Leave intact blisters alone. Do not pick at them or peel away their covering.
  5. 5Drink water. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can relieve pain; do not give aspirin to children.
  6. 6Avoid numbing products containing benzocaine or lidocaine, which can cause allergic reactions and worsen the burn.
35

Tanning beds use UV light too, so moving the appointment indoors changes the venue, not the activity. Indoor tanning also damages skin and is not a safer way to develop colour.4

When does sunburn need medical help?

Get medical help right away for fever, severe painful blisters, faintness, rapid breathing, extreme thirst or no urine output. A large blistered area with headache, fever or chills needs urgent assessment. Do not wait to see whether the redness becomes brown.23

If you burn after very little sunlight, ask a clinician about unusual sun sensitivity. Some medicines, including doxycycline and tetracycline, make burning easier. Your usual tendency to tan does not rule out a reaction related to medication.356

How can you avoid another burn?

Everyone has sun sensitive skin. Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against UVA and UVB. Cover exposed skin generously and reapply every two hours, after swimming or sweating, and as the label directs. Add protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat; clouds do not eliminate UV exposure.37

Self tanner gives skin a tan appearance without UV tanning, so the colour does not need a holiday itinerary. Keep tanning products out of your eyes, nose and mouth, and avoid breathing in spray tans. Cosmetic colour does not protect against UV rays, so sunscreen still belongs in the routine.14
