Which acne marks can vitamin C help?

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation means extra pigment left behind after inflammation or injury. These patches appear where the original spot healed and range from light brown to black. Inflammation stimulates production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. Vitamin C is one topical option for lightening pigment in the skin's surface layer.2

Anyone can develop these marks, but they are more common, more intense and longer lasting in darker skin tones. Surface pigmentation and pigment trapped deeper in the skin need different expectations; deeper pigmentation can have a grey or purple brown appearance. One category called "acne marks" is convenient for a product aisle, less convenient for choosing treatment.2

How should you approach fading the marks?

  1. 1Treat ongoing acne first. Controlling breakouts removes the trigger for new dark marks; vitamin C belongs in the pigmentation part of the plan.
  2. 2Use sunscreen daily. Choose a tinted formula with iron oxide, broad spectrum protection, water resistance and SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to uncovered skin before going outside, then reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating.
  3. 3Add a vitamin C product for existing dark spots. Products that fade pigmentation tend to work better once the cause is controlled and skin is protected from sunlight.
  4. 4Keep the routine gentle. Stop a product if it burns or stings, because irritation can itself trigger more dark spots.

Sunlight can darken existing pigmentation. Iron oxide adds protection against visible light, which also contributes to dark spots. Sun protection is part of fading dark spots, not an optional extra for days when the serum wants all the credit.12

How long does fading take?

After the trigger stops, a spot a few shades darker than your natural skin colour usually fades within 6 to 12 months without treatment. Deeper pigment can take years. Treatment can speed fading, but there is no fixed vitamin C timetable for ordinary acne marks.1

What about redness and indented scars?

After fractional CO2 laser treatment for indented acne scars, a serum combining vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid improved recovery, redness and pigment measurements over 14 days. That combination was used as part of procedure aftercare. Improvement in everyday red acne marks or scar depth from vitamin C alone remains uncertain.3

If dark marks are not improving with your current treatment, see a dermatologist. Prescription treatments or carefully combined treatments can be needed. Seek help for ongoing inflammatory acne too: early treatment matters for reducing later scarring and pigment changes.14
