What should you check on the bottle?

Use the Drug Facts panel on the exact bottle you are buying, especially if you are comparing versions sold in different countries. A name such as UV Clear is not a substitute for reading the label, even if the name has already handled most of the advertising.3

  • Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB, the two types of ultraviolet rays that damage skin.
  • SPF describes protection against sunburn, primarily from UVB rays. It does not describe UVA protection by itself.
  • Water resistance is a separate claim. Look for a stated duration of 40 or 80 minutes rather than assuming SPF 46 covers swimming or sweating.
  • Active ingredients are the sunscreen filters. Read that section to identify the formula rather than assuming the product is mineral, chemical or hybrid.

How do you apply it?

The following is general sunscreen guidance. Follow the directions on your EltaMD bottle for any product specific instructions.3

  1. 1Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  2. 2For your face, use at least 1 teaspoon, approximately the amount covering the length of your index and middle fingers, and rub it in thoroughly.
  3. 3Cover the other exposed areas too, including your neck, ears and hairline. Keep sunscreen out of your eyes and mouth.
  4. 4Use enough sunscreen for the rest of your exposed skin. Most adults need about 1 ounce to cover skin not covered by clothing, with more needed depending on body size.
  5. 5Reapply every two hours while outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after toweling off as well.

Do you need it every day?

Wear sunscreen daily, including for short trips outdoors. Cloudy weather and winter do not remove UV exposure. Apply before your first outdoor exposure rather than waiting until you reach your destination. Sunscreen does not block every UV ray, so use shade, protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses as well.14

How does EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 46 perform?

SPF 46 describes sunburn protection, not how the sunscreen feels, whether it pills or how it looks under makeup. An SPF number is not a cosmetics review, however much work the front of a bottle would like two digits to do. Judge those wearing qualities separately from the protection claims.3

SPF is not a timer: SPF 46 does not mean you can stay outside 46 times longer without reapplying. Sun intensity changes with time of day and location. Correct application and regular reapplication matter even with a higher SPF. Regular sunscreen use helps prevent sun damage; that is different from treating damage already present.34

What if you have sensitive skin?

For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. Read the active ingredients on your UV Clear bottle before treating it as a mineral option. The term "sensitive skin" has no FDA definition, so use the formula and directions to guide your choice rather than that wording alone.2

How should you store it, and when should you replace it?

Keep the container away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Outdoors, keep it in the shade or wrap it in a towel. Discard sunscreen after its expiration date. If there is no expiration date, replace it three years after purchase; discard it if you do not know how old it is.3

If you think you have developed sun damaged skin, a dermatologist can examine it and advise you on care.1
