SPF measures protection against sunburn, not visible light. Broad spectrum means protection against UVA and UVB, the two types of harmful ultraviolet rays. Neither term tells you whether a tint matches your skin, and neither replaces checking the actual ingredients. For the untinted bottle, verify the current US label before treating the formulas as otherwise identical.2

Who should choose tinted?

Tinted sunscreen is especially worth considering for darker skin tones, where sunlight's visible light can cause persistent darkening and worsen hyperpigmentation, meaning dark spots or patches. Iron oxide pigments help protect against that light. This is general guidance about tinted sunscreens, not a reason to expect UV Clear to erase existing pigmentation on a particular schedule.4

Tint can also reduce the white cast left by some sunscreens. Choose a shade that matches both your skin tone and undertone, because "universal" is an ambitious word for a colour. Undertone is the underlying hue that affects how a shade looks on your skin. A small bottle or sample is useful before committing to a finish you will wear every day.234

Choose untinted if added colour is not something you want from your sunscreen. If the UV Clear tint is a poor match but visible light protection matters to you, consider a different tinted sunscreen shade rather than applying less to make the colour disappear. Shade suitability matters because the product still needs generous application.34

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Apply sunscreen every day. For UV Clear Tinted SPF 46, apply liberally to your face and neck 15 minutes before sun exposure.
  2. 2Use enough for full coverage. General sunscreen guidance suggests a generous dollop about the size of a nickel for the face; the neck and other exposed areas also need coverage.
  3. 3Apply makeup after sunscreen. Do not rely on makeup with SPF as your only sunscreen, because normal makeup application usually provides too little product.
  4. 4Reapply UV Clear Tinted at least every two hours. For swimming or sweating, use a water resistant sunscreen instead and follow its reapplication directions.

Treat tinted sunscreen as sunscreen first and makeup second, even if the bottle is auditioning for both jobs. A cosmetic finish does not change the need for adequate coverage. Use shade, protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses alongside sunscreen rather than asking one facial lotion to handle every exposed area.45

What if your skin is sensitive?

UV Clear Tinted combines mineral zinc oxide with chemical octinoxate, so it is a hybrid sunscreen, not a mineral only formula. For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. Do not apply UV Clear Tinted to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes and rinse with water if needed. Stop using it and ask a physician if a rash occurs.12
