Choose for the problem behind the dullness

A serum is a light, concentrated liquid that delivers ingredients to the skin and usually needs only a few drops for the face. Choose the ingredient for your main concern rather than treating every product labelled "glow" as the same thing.2

Retinol is a retinoid, a type of vitamin A ingredient used on skin. It speeds skin cell turnover and can improve texture, dark spots and fine lines. Choose it when texture is the main concern, rather than adding it automatically to a vitamin C routine. Retinoids are generally applied before bed, after cleansing and waiting 20 to 30 minutes.1

What can vitamin C actually do?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant: it helps protect skin against free radicals, unstable molecules that damage cells. Sunlight and pollution contribute to that damage. Topical vitamin C also supports collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps hold tissues together, and skin produces less of it with age. Vitamin C can improve the appearance of fine lines and help fade dark spots, although the spot fading benefit can diminish after you stop using it.34

What should you look for in a vitamin C serum?

For a studied formulation, look for an active form such as L ascorbic acid at 10% to 20%, with a pH below 3.5. The manufacturer's ingredient information can help you check those details. Sensitive skin calls for a lower concentration. Going above 20% raises the risk of irritation rather than making it a better starting point.35

The formula matters as much as the ingredient name. Vitamin C needs to remain stable and reach the skin to work; some formulations contain too little antioxidant or do not absorb sufficiently. L ascorbic acid is unstable when exposed to oxygen. Advertising claims can outrun a formula's performance, so a bottle's confidence is not a buying criterion.4

Choose dark or tinted packaging rather than a clear bottle because vitamin C is sensitive to sunlight, heat and light. A serum containing vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid is another option: these combinations can help protect against sun damage when used alongside sunscreen.35

How do you apply a serum for glowing skin?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  2. 2Apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to your face and neck in the morning.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer after the serum.
  4. 4Finish with sunscreen. Use SPF 30 or higher with broad spectrum protection and water resistance, and apply it 15 minutes before going outdoors.
15

Start vitamin C every other day, then use it daily if your skin tolerates it. Mild tingling can occur. Vitamin C adds antioxidant protection but does not replace sunscreen or protective clothing. Sunscreen goes after your other skincare products and before makeup.15

How long does a serum take to work?

Allow about three months of consistent vitamin C use for a noticeable improvement. Take a photo without makeup before starting, then another each month to help judge the change. Switching products frequently makes progress harder to assess. For skincare more generally, allow at least 30 days before judging whether a product is working, unless it irritates your skin.13

Who should be careful?

Test a serum on a small area before applying it widely, especially if your skin is sensitive. Vitamin C can cause dryness, itching or redness. Stop using it and speak to a doctor if you develop substantial discomfort or irritation. Vitamin C skincare is not recommended for children. If you have a known ingredient allergy, discuss the product with your doctor before use.235

Be cautious about combining acidic serums with other acids or retinol, because the combination can irritate skin. Do not add a retinol serum casually if you already use a prescription retinoid cream. Overusing exfoliating products can damage the skin barrier, the protective outer layer, leaving skin raw and irritated. See a dermatologist if a skin condition such as eczema or rosacea affects your quality of life.12

Can a face serum with aloe vera help skin glow?

Aloe vera is not an established choice for making skin brighter. Its clinical benefits on skin remain uncertain, so do not choose a glow serum solely because it contains aloe. For dark spots, vitamin C is a better supported choice.16

Can a face serum with antioxidants help skin glow?

Yes, a well formulated antioxidant serum can improve skin appearance. Vitamin C is a practical option for dark spots and signs of aging; tea polyphenols and resveratrol are other antioxidant ingredients used in serums targeting wrinkles. "Antioxidant" alone is not enough to choose a product: concentration, stability and absorption still matter.24

Can a face serum with collagen help skin glow?

Collagen peptides are one serum option for dry skin, but they are not the same choice as vitamin C for dark spots or collagen production. Choose for the concern you want to address, not the collagen name alone.2
