What is the difference?
Dry skin loses too much water and oil. Its outer layer, called the stratum corneum, needs both water binding components and fats to maintain an effective barrier. Ceramides are part of those fats, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids. Hyaluronic acid binds water and also contributes to skin structure and barrier function. The distinction is mainly barrier lipids versus water binding, not two competing ways to solve exactly the same problem.14
| What matters | Ceramides | Hyaluronic acid |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Form part of the lipid barrier that limits water loss. | Bind water and help maintain skin hydration. |
| Why choose them? | A useful ingredient to look for in a moisturizer for dry skin. | A useful hydrating ingredient, including alongside ceramides. |
| Texture | Choose the finished cream or ointment, not just the ingredient name. | The ingredient name alone does not tell you how rich the moisturizer is. |
Which should you buy?
If your skin is consistently dry, prioritize a cream or ointment over a light lotion or gel. Creams contain more oil than lotions, while ointments are the thickest and most effective option for dry skin. For occasional seasonal dryness in otherwise normal skin, a lotion can be sufficient. If only some areas are dry, moisturize those areas rather than treating oily areas identically.2
Look for ceramides, hyaluronic acid and cholesterol, and favor a fragrance free formula. Choose based on the severity of dryness, comfort, cost and availability.35
How should you use the moisturizer?
- 1Wash with a gentle cleanser rather than regular soap. Keep baths and showers warm, not hot, and limit them to 5 to 10 minutes.
- 2Pat your skin dry, leaving it damp. Apply your moisturizer at this point to help lock in water.
- 3Apply moisturizer 2 to 3 times a day, or as often as needed. After bathing is a particularly useful time; the routine need not depend on a particular hour.
- 4Use a thicker moisturizer where dryness is worse, especially on the hands.
A moisturizer containing both ingredients lets you use them together without turning the bathroom shelf into a departmental meeting. For dry skin, the practical priority is regular use of a suitable moisturizer, not accumulating separate ingredient bottles.35
What results should you expect?
Moisturizers help reduce water loss, improve barrier function and relieve itch. In adults with moderate eczema, a ceramide rich cream and cleanser regimen improved hydration and water loss over 28 days compared with placebo. The regimen also contained other ingredients, including glycerin and niacinamide. Eczema severity improved in both groups, with no significant difference between them at day 28, so keep moisturizer alongside eczema care rather than treating it as a replacement.56
What if your skin is sensitive or still uncomfortable?
Fragrance can irritate and dry out skin, so avoid it, especially if your skin is sensitive. Do not scrub or exfoliate peeling dry skin; moisturize instead. Arrange medical advice if dryness persists despite care, becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating, or if itching disrupts sleep. Open cuts or sores from scratching also need medical attention.123
