Why does damp skin help?
Hyaluronic acid helps keep skin hydrated by holding water. Applying moisturizer while skin is still damp helps retain moisture after washing. The moisturizer also supports your skin's outer barrier, the protective layer that limits moisture escaping. These are related jobs: keeping water in the skin and helping stop it from leaving.13
How should you apply it?
- 1Wash gently with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Hot water and scrubbing can strip away protective oils and worsen dryness.
- 2Pat your skin gently with a towel, leaving it slightly damp. You do not need to rub your face completely dry before moisturizing.
- 3Apply your hyaluronic acid moisturizer promptly. After washing your face, aim to moisturize within five minutes; after a shower, aim for within three minutes.
- 4In the daytime, finish with sunscreen of at least SPF 30. A combination moisturizer and sunscreen is another option.
If you want to use a separate serum, keep the distinction clear: the damp skin advice above concerns moisturizing, rather than a tested application method for your particular serum. A moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid already provides a way to include the ingredient.1
Should you use it morning or night?
Build moisturizing around washing, rather than treating hyaluronic acid as a separate appointment. Moisturize after your morning or evening cleanse, and reapply moisturizer during the day when your skin feels dry. Dry facial skin can benefit from moisturizing multiple times daily. Keep sunscreen in the daytime routine; hydration and sun protection serve different purposes.145
What if your skin still feels dry?
Look beyond the damp versus dry question. Cold outdoor air and indoor heating reduce available moisture, and you may need a thicker moisturizer in winter. A humidifier can help when indoor air is dry. Retinol can also dry skin, and a moisturizing product containing hyaluronic acid can help counterbalance that dryness. Do not assume that changing the application surface will solve every cause of dry skin.124
Choose products made for the face and look for fragrance free formulas, especially if your skin is dry or sensitive. Fragrance free and unscented are not the same: an unscented product can still contain irritating fragrance chemicals. A fancy bottle is not a requirement for replacing lost moisture, however much shelf space it requests. Moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid and ceramides are available at the drugstore.4
When should you get help?
If your skin is raw, irritated or unusually reactive, get product advice from a dermatologist rather than experimenting with application techniques. Test a new moisturizer on a small area before using it widely if you have contact dermatitis, a rash caused by contact with an irritant or allergen. Avoid the product causing the reaction. Seek care for a rash that blisters, returns repeatedly or causes discomfort.5
If you have eczema, slightly damp application is also useful, but prioritize a thick cream or ointment that helps restore the protective barrier. Contact a dermatologist if skin becomes red, cracked or weepy, or itching interferes with sleep. Persistent facial dryness that is not improving also deserves a medical assessment rather than another serum.46
