The skin barrier is the outer layer that limits water loss and keeps unwanted substances out. Niacinamide supports production of barrier fats, including ceramides. Hyaluronic acid holds water rather than exfoliating skin, despite having a name that sounds like it belongs beside a chemical peel.26

Which should you buy?

If dryness is your only concern, start with a hyaluronic acid moisturizer. If dryness comes with sensitivity or redness, niacinamide is a useful option for barrier support and calming inflammation. A moisturizer containing both is also a reasonable choice; the ingredients can be paired.45

Pay attention to the whole formula, not just the ingredient printed largest on the front. Lighter lotions can be insufficient in cold, dry weather, so choose a cream or balm when you need richer moisture. Glycerin, petrolatum and shea butter are other useful ingredients for dry skin.6

How do you use them?

  1. 1Cleanse gently. For skin that tends to be dry, washing once daily can be enough. Choose a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin rather than regular bar soap or a scrub with particles.
  2. 2Apply moisturizer while your face is still damp. Spread it over your face and neck. A moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or both lets you include the ingredient within this step.
  3. 3If you choose a separate niacinamide serum, use it after moisturizer or combine it with your moisturizer. Niacinamide can be used once or twice daily. Avoid stacking several products containing it.
  4. 4In the morning, apply sunscreen after moisturizer. Choose broad spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher and water resistance.

Think of the two ingredients as doing different jobs: hyaluronic acid helps retain water, and niacinamide helps skin hold onto moisture. Neither choice makes the moisturizer step redundant. Applying moisturizer after washing traps existing water, while the moisturizer helps recreate the outer barrier that prevents moisture from escaping.1237

What if your skin is sensitive or treatment is drying it out?

Niacinamide is generally gentle, but it can cause itching, redness, mild burning or an allergic reaction. For sensitive skin, start slowly with a low concentration; most products contain 5% or less. Test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use. Choose a moisturizer labeled for sensitive skin, with fewer ingredients and without potentially irritating fragrance.34

Hyaluronic acid is safe during pregnancy and nursing, and adverse reactions are rare. Other ingredients in a combined product can carry their own risks, so check the full formula rather than treating the hyaluronic acid name as clearance for everything in the bottle.1

If acne treatment is causing dryness, daily moisturizer can help you tolerate benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, prescription retinoids or isotretinoin. Look for a moisturizer labeled noncomedogenic, meaning unlikely to clog pores. If you are unsure how to moisturize alongside acne medication, a dermatologist can help choose the moisturizer as part of your treatment plan.7
