What does face toner do?

Toner is usually a watery lotion, sometimes called a tonic or essence. Hydrating formulas add moisture; acid formulas can unclog pores and smooth texture. Pores can look smaller, but their size is largely genetic.2

Which toner should you choose?

Dry skinHydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid; avoid alcohol based toner.

Do you need toner in your routine?

A daily routine can focus on cleansing, sun protection and treating specific concerns, so toner does not need its own reserved parking space on the bathroom shelf. An expensive or lengthy routine is not necessary. If dryness is your main concern, prioritize a mild cleanser and moisturizer rather than an alcohol based toner. Wear broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. Toner is an addition to those steps, not a replacement for them.1

How do you apply toner?

  1. 1Cleanse your face and let it dry.
  2. 2Gently swipe toner over your face with a cotton pad, or mist a spray formula directly onto your face.
  3. 3Leave toner on; do not rinse it off.
  4. 4Follow with your usual treatments and moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning.

Use toner morning or evening, once or twice daily. Start strong acid formulas every other day and increase only as tolerated.2

How long does toner take to work?

Changes are usually subtle and take six weeks to three months. Toners targeting acne or hyperpigmentation, meaning darker patches or spots, can take about two to three months.2

What if your skin is oily?

Salicylic, glycolic and lactic acids can reduce oiliness, but they can also be too harsh. Reduce use or stop the product if your skin becomes irritated. Look for products labeled oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores. Use a gentle foaming cleanser rather than trying to strip away every trace of oil: harsh cleansing can irritate skin and trigger increased oil production.4

Moisturize after cleansing even if your face is oily. For shine during the day, gently press blotting paper against your face for a few seconds rather than rubbing. If oiliness, blackheads or acne remain difficult to manage, see a dermatologist rather than repeatedly adding stronger products.4

Is micellar water the same as toner?

Micellar water lifts away dirt, oil and most makeup. Toner goes onto already clean skin and is used for hydration or specific skin concerns. A toner can remove small amounts of residue after washing, but it is not your main makeup removal step.25

If you use micellar water to remove sunscreen or cosmetics, follow with a gentle cleanser before toner. Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional cleanser. Micellar water itself usually does not need rinsing, and it can be used as a morning cleanser, before bed or both. Finish the routine with moisturizer and morning sunscreen.5

Who should skip toner?

If you have rosacea, a condition that can cause facial flushing, persistent redness and bumps, avoid toner and astringents. Rosacea often makes skin sensitive and easily irritated. Avoid products containing alcohol, fragrance, glycolic acid, lactic acid or menthol, and stop exfoliating. Choose fragrance free products rather than products labeled unscented.36

For rosacea, gently cleanse twice daily with a mild cleanser and your fingertips, without scrubbing. If you use prescribed rosacea medication, apply it before moisturizer. Let your face dry before moisturizing to reduce burning or stinging. Ask your dermatologist for product suggestions if you cannot find skincare that feels comfortable.3

Persistent flushing, facial heat, stinging and acne like bumps deserve medical assessment rather than an assumption that you need an acne toner. Some acne treatments can irritate rosacea. If you have rosacea with eye irritation, eye pain or blurred vision, consult a doctor or eye specialist.6
