What does face toner spray do?

Modern toners can hydrate skin and help subsequent products absorb. Acid toners can unclog pores and smooth texture, making pores look smaller without changing their largely genetic size.1

How do you apply toner spray?

  1. 1Cleanse your face and let it dry.
  2. 2Mist the toner directly onto your face. Leave it on rather than rinsing it off.
  3. 3Apply any usual spot treatments, then moisturizer. Finish your morning routine with sunscreen.
13

Use toner once or twice daily, morning or evening. Start strong acid formulas every other day and increase only as tolerated. Expect subtle changes over six weeks to three months; formulas targeting acne or dark marks can take two to three months.1

Can toner spray replace cleansing?

No. Toner belongs after cleansing, not in place of it. Micellar water is a cleanser containing tiny clusters of cleansing molecules called micelles, which lift away dirt, oil and makeup. Toner does not have the same cleansing ability. Micellar water and toner are both water based, but matching appearances are not a qualification for doing the same job.3

If you use micellar water to remove sunscreen or cosmetics, follow it with a gentle cleanser before applying toner. Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional cleanser too. Micellar water is generally gentle enough for dry and sensitive skin, but that does not make the toner you apply afterward equally gentle.3

Be careful with exfoliating toner and other actives

Alpha and beta hydroxy acids chemically exfoliate skin, meaning they dissolve dead cells from its outer layer. Exfoliation is not suitable for everyone. Prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can already make skin more sensitive or cause peeling; adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or cause breakouts. Consider those existing products before adding an acid toner.4

Avoid strong exfoliation if you have darker skin or develop dark marks after acne, bites or burns, because aggressive exfoliation can increase pigmentation. Do not exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds. Follow exfoliation with moisturizer. Stronger exfoliation generally needs a less frequent schedule, not more applications. A dermatologist can help decide whether exfoliation is suitable if you are unsure.4

What if you have sensitive skin or rosacea?

Choose fragrance free rather than unscented products if fragrance is a concern. Unscented cosmetics can contain fragrance used to mask other smells. Fragrance is the most common cause of contact dermatitis from cosmetics, an inflamed skin reaction after contact with a product. Preservatives are another common allergen, but water containing cosmetics also need antimicrobial preservatives to prevent bacterial or fungal growth.5

For rosacea, skip toners and astringents. Rosacea makes skin easily irritated, and ingredients including alcohol, fragrance, glycolic acid, lactic acid and menthol can aggravate it. Focus on gentle cleansing and a rosacea friendly moisturizer instead. If you use rosacea medication, apply it before moisturizer. Ask your dermatologist for product suggestions if finding tolerable skincare is difficult.2

When should you stop using a toner?

Stop using a toner that causes burning, itching, swelling, a scaly rash or blisters. Cosmetic reactions can appear quickly or develop after repeated exposure. An allergy can develop even after years of using a product without problems. Do not keep applying a suspected trigger while waiting for your skin to adjust.5

Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed allergic skin reaction that usually appears 24 to 72 hours after contact. The affected area can be itchy, swollen, scaly or blistered, and the rash can spread beyond where the product touched. On darker skin, a reaction can show as dark or leathery patches rather than obvious redness.6

See a dermatologist for recurring or persistent reactions. Medical patch testing can identify an allergen so you can avoid it in other products too. Avoiding the trigger usually allows allergic contact dermatitis to settle over several days. Difficulty breathing or collapse after a cosmetic reaction requires emergency medical help.56
