Which toner should I choose?

Decide whether you want extra moisture or an acne treatment. Modern soothing toners differ from harsh astringents that strip away oil. A bottle called toner can be a hydrating extra or an exfoliating product, which is a lot of responsibility for one vague name. For sensitive skin, avoid heavily fragranced formulas and those with lots of dyes.2

An alcohol free product is the safer starting point for acne care. Avoid rubbing alcohol and drying astringents such as witch hazel. Drying out your skin can increase irritation and make acne worse, rather than help clear it. If your current acne routine already leaves your skin dry, address that with moisturizer instead of adding another drying step.134

How do I use toner with acne?

  1. 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and your fingertips. Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Do not scrub.
  2. 2Apply toner after cleansing and before moisturizer. Gently swipe it on with a cotton pad, or mist it directly onto your face if it comes as a spray. Do not rinse it off.
  3. 3Start an acid toner every other day and increase only as your skin tolerates it. A gentle toner can be used once or twice daily; it does not need a separate morning and evening application.
  4. 4Follow with moisturizer. Choose a water based or noncomedogenic formula, meaning one designed not to clog pores.

If you already use acne medicine, follow its directions rather than treating the toner sequence as a rule for your prescription. Acne medicines can cause dryness and peeling. For irritation from medicines bought without a prescription, general guidance includes using smaller amounts, reducing frequency to every other or third day, and waiting 10 to 15 minutes after washing before applying them.5

Can face toner stop acne?

A toner with an acne ingredient can help, but a hydrating toner is not the same thing as acne treatment. Hydration is a useful job for a toner, without promoting the bottle to head of acne management. Salicylic acid gently exfoliates and helps unclog pores. It comes in cleansers, lotions and other formats too, so toner is not the only way to use it.12

Other acne treatments do different jobs. Benzoyl peroxide targets bacteria that aggravate acne, while retinoids help break up blackheads and whiteheads and prevent clogged pores. Retinoids are used across the affected area rather than only on individual spots. Choose treatment for the acne you need to manage, not simply because the product fits the toner slot.6

How long should I give it?

For a toner intended to help prevent acne, expect about two to three months before seeing results. Acne treatments generally need six to eight weeks to show some improvement, with complete clearing often taking three to four months. Changing treatments every week can irritate skin and cause breakouts. Keep using a tolerable treatment as directed rather than replacing it after a few applications.24

When should I stop or get help?

Stop using a toner that dries or irritates your skin or makes breakouts worse, even if it says noncomedogenic. See a doctor or dermatologist for painful or deep acne, worsening breakouts, scarring, or acne that causes emotional stress. Also seek help if self care and acne medicines bought without a prescription have not helped after several months. Persistent acne needs a treatment plan, not another toner experiment.345
