Which COSRX toner are you buying?

The two bottles share some initials, which is convenient until you are trying to buy the same one again. Their names are not interchangeable, and neither are their ingredient lists.12

ProductWhat COSRX offersBuying decision
AHA BHA Clarifying Treatment TonerA spray toner marketed for gentle exfoliation and all skin types.Consider it if gentle exfoliation is your priority. Confirm the ingredients and acid concentrations on the exact bottle.
Refresh ABC Daily TonerA toner containing glycolic acid, betaine salicylate and ascorbyl glucoside, marketed for dullness, texture and tone.Consider it if you specifically want the ABC formula, including its vitamin C ingredient.

A spray format is convenient, but the nozzle is not a performance review. Judge an exfoliating toner by its formula and how your skin tolerates it, rather than its dispenser.13

What are the ingredients in COSRX AHA BHA Toner?

For Clarifying Treatment Toner, check the full ingredient list on that product rather than borrowing the ABC list. Refresh ABC contains kiwi and dragon fruit extracts, willow bark water, apple fruit water, niacinamide, glycolic acid, allantoin, panthenol, adenosine, betaine salicylate and ascorbyl glucoside, among other ingredients. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, that loosens the bonds holding dead surface cells together.24

COSRX lists 16% apple water and 17% willow bark water for Refresh ABC. Those are percentages of the named waters, not 16% glycolic acid or 17% salicylic acid. Do not read them as the toner's exfoliating acid strength.2

How should you use it?

  1. 1Test a small amount on a small area before applying the toner across your face.
  2. 2Follow your bottle's directions after cleansing. For Refresh ABC, COSRX tells you to soak a cotton pad, gently wipe the face while avoiding the eyes and mouth, then pat for absorption.
  3. 3Start cautiously. General glycolic acid guidance is once or twice a week at night, increasing only if your skin tolerates it. This is a starting approach, not a confirmed schedule for Clarifying Treatment Toner.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer afterwards because exfoliation can dry the skin.
  5. 5Use broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher during the day and reapply every two hours. Nighttime application does not remove the need for daytime sun protection.

What results should you expect?

Chemical exfoliation dissolves dead skin cells rather than scrubbing them away. Glycolic acid can improve surface texture and tone, but that general benefit is not a timetable for either COSRX toner. Visible brightening or more even pigmentation with cosmetic glycolic acid products can take several months of consistent use. Neither toner has a confirmed product specific results timeline here.34

Who should be careful?

An all skin types claim does not remove the need for caution. Dry or sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema and active skin infections call for particular care with glycolic acid. Never exfoliate sunburned skin or open cuts. Strong exfoliation can also worsen dark spots, particularly in darker skin tones.34

When introducing an acid toner, avoid adding other exfoliants, retinol or a separate vitamin C serum at the same time. Prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can increase sensitivity, and added exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts. AHA products can be alternated with retinoids or vitamin C rather than layered together immediately.346

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider before using the toner; low concentration glycolic acid guidance does not settle the suitability of the whole formula. Stop using a BHA product and consult a physician if you develop irritation or prolonged stinging. Avoid BHA products on infants and children.45
