What does the toner do?

The formula contains glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, and betaine salicylate, its BHA exfoliating ingredient. COSRX positions glycolic acid for surface smoothing and betaine salicylate for congested pores and oil balance. The formula also includes willow bark water, apple fruit water, panthenol and allantoin. The toner is intended for gentle exfoliation, despite a name that sounds like it wants to chair a laboratory meeting.1

Chemical exfoliation uses acids to loosen dead skin cells rather than scrubbing them away. AHAs loosen the substances holding surface cells together, encouraging those cells to shed. That can improve the appearance of texture and uneven colour. Stronger AHA treatments can have different effects from a gentle toner, so promises about peels should not become expectations for this bottle.23

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Cleanse your face.
  2. 2Spray the toner onto a cotton pad rather than directly onto your face.
  3. 3Gently wipe the pad over your face, keeping clear of the eye and mouth areas.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer afterwards to help counter dryness from exfoliation.
  5. 5For daytime use, follow with broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.

When should you use an AHA/BHA toner?

Use this toner after cleansing. Night is a practical choice for a leave on AHA product, although COSRX also allows daytime use with sunscreen. COSRX positions the toner for daily use; that does not mean daily exfoliation is the right starting schedule for every skin type.13

Choose frequency by how your skin tolerates exfoliation, not by trying to use the bottle as quickly as possible. More aggressive exfoliation generally needs less frequent use. If your skin becomes red or irritated, stop rather than increasing frequency. Exfoliation is not necessary for everyone, and doing more can make dryness and breakouts worse.2

Who should be careful?

COSRX targets beginners and includes sensitive skin among its intended users. Sensitive skin can still sting or burn with exfoliating products. Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin generally needs a gentler approach than oily, thicker skin. Avoid exfoliating sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds.12

Be particularly cautious with aggressive exfoliation if you have a darker skin tone or develop dark marks after burns, insect bites or breakouts. Strong chemical treatments and vigorous scrubbing can increase pigmentation in these circumstances. A dermatologist can help you decide whether exfoliation is useful if you are unsure how your skin responds.2

Can you use it with retinol or other acids?

COSRX tells you to avoid combining this toner with other AHAs, BHAs, retinol or vitamin C. Prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide also deserve caution: exfoliating while using them can worsen dryness or trigger breakouts. If you use a prescription skin treatment, ask the prescribing clinician before adding this exfoliant.12

COSRX says to avoid this toner during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Follow that product specific direction rather than substituting general advice about glycolic acid.1

Test it before using it across your face

  1. 1Choose a small area about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or inside your elbow, where the product will not be rubbed or washed away.
  2. 2Apply the normal amount to that spot twice daily for seven to 10 days. This is a general home testing method, not a twice daily facial routine.
  3. 3Leave the toner on as you would during normal use.
  4. 4If there is no redness, itching or swelling after the testing period, proceed to facial use.
  5. 5If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and do not use it again.
4

Glycolic acid can irritate skin, particularly sensitive skin. For a reaction, a cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve discomfort. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and these measures do not relieve it. Persistent irritation also needs assessment; medical patch testing can help identify an ingredient responsible for an allergic reaction.45

Nighttime use still needs daytime sun protection

AHA products can increase sensitivity to sunlight and the chance of sunburn during use and for up to a week after stopping. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure throughout that period. Applying the toner at night does not remove the need for these precautions the next day.6

What results should you expect?

Think of this as a gentle texture maintenance step, not a timed resurfacing treatment. There is no fixed results deadline for this toner. General AHA effects depend on the preparation and its strength; higher concentration treatments have different uses and schedules. Smoother texture is the intended goal, not the sweeping administrative reform suggested by the word 'clarifying'.13

Is it the same as the COSRX 35 Peel?

The toner and the peel have different strengths and application routines, despite sharing enough initials to look like office departments.7

Choose the toner if you want the beginner focused option. The peel is a separate strong treatment for experienced users, not the next required step after a toner. Do not apply the peel's 10 minute schedule or its advertised immediate results to the toner.7
