What does each product do?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, an exfoliating ingredient that helps unclog pores. Anua's toner is designed to moisturize and soothe irritation, with a lightweight texture. Its listed formula includes Heartleaf water, glycerin, panthenol and forms of hyaluronic acid, and Anua describes it as fragrance free. The toner is there for hydration and comfort, not to turn two bottles into one miracle. A soothing toner is a more suitable supporting step than a harsh astringent that dries and irritates skin.34

How do I use them together?

For a salicylic acid cleanser, use this sequence:

  1. 1Apply the cleanser to wet skin with your fingers. Massage gently without scrubbing, rinse with warm water, then pat dry with a soft, clean towel.
  2. 2Apply Anua Heartleaf 77 Soothing Toner after cleansing. Anua allows a cotton pad or fingertips; press it on with clean palms instead of swiping if your skin feels reactive.
  3. 3Follow with a gentle moisturizer if your skin feels tight. Use sunscreen when you will be exposed to daylight.

For a salicylic acid serum, liquid or other leave on treatment, follow its label for skin preparation and application order. The toner belongs after cleansing, but a treatment's specific directions take priority over a generic toner then serum rule. Salicylic acid cleansers are rinsed off; treatment gels and lotions can remain on the skin during the day or overnight. Do not treat those formats as interchangeable.25

Can I use both every day?

Anua allows the toner morning and night. Salicylic acid frequency depends on the product: start less often if it causes dryness or irritation, and never exceed its directions. Acne face washes commonly contain 2% salicylic acid, but the percentage alone does not set your schedule. Wash acne prone skin morning and night, without extra cleansing sessions; that does not mean every wash must contain salicylic acid. Full acne treatment benefits can take several weeks or longer.245

What if one or both products are new?

Introduce one new product at a time. For the toner, Anua suggests testing a small amount behind the ear or along the jawline, checking after 24 hours, then testing a small cheek area for another day before full face use. Check for burning, swelling or persistent redness. For a new salicylic acid product, test one or two small treatment areas for three days before using it as directed.12

What if the combination stings?

Pause exfoliation while skin is actively stinging. For several days, keep to gentle cleansing, hydration and moisturizer, using only products your skin tolerates. A short routine leaves fewer products to audition for the same job. Avoid heat, rubbing and cotton pads during a flare. Even a gentle formula can sting when skin is less tolerant. Once the stinging settles, reintroduce treatments one at a time.1

Do not apply salicylic acid to broken, red, swollen, irritated or infected skin. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent irritation. Stop use and seek immediate medical help for hives, throat tightness, breathing difficulty, faintness or facial swelling.2

If you use tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide or other topical medicines, check with your doctor before adding salicylic acid to the same area. Discuss salicylic acid use with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.2
