The shared word "Heartleaf" is not a product identifier, however much work it is doing on the packaging. A sunscreen bought outside the US can have different labeling, so read the actual tube rather than borrowing another version's directions.34

What is in the Goodal sunscreen?

The US Goodal Heartleaf Soothing Moisture Sunscreen comes in a 50 mL tube. Its active sunscreen ingredients are avobenzone 2.85%, homosalate 7%, octisalate 4.5% and octocrylene 9%. The inactive ingredients include Houttuynia cordata extract, glycerin, ceramide NP and several forms of hyaluronic acid. The active ingredients provide sun protection; heartleaf is listed among the inactive ingredients.14

What protection should you look for?

Choose packaging marked broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher and water resistant. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB, the two types of ultraviolet radiation. SPF mainly describes protection against sunburn from UVB, not how many hours you can stay outside. Confirm the SPF on your Goodal tube rather than assuming a number from the product name.45

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Apply the Goodal sunscreen liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure.
  2. 2Cover all exposed skin. General sunscreen guidance calls for at least 1 teaspoon for the face and about 1 ounce for an adult's exposed skin, with more needed depending on body size. Rub it in thoroughly.
  3. 3Include easily missed areas such as the ears, neck, hairline, hands and tops of the feet. Use an SPF 30 or higher lip balm for the lips.
  4. 4Reapply at least every two hours outdoors. Reapply immediately after swimming or sweating, and use a sunscreen specifically labeled water resistant for those activities.

The Goodal sunscreen helps prevent sunburn. Used as directed alongside other sun protection measures, it also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun. Use shade and protective clothing, and limit sun exposure especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunscreen is needed outdoors even on cloudy days and in winter.467

When should you stop using it?

Do not apply the Goodal sunscreen to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in them. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash develops. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately. Ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to a child younger than six months.46

How should you store it?

Protect the tube from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Outdoors, keep sunscreen in the shade or wrap the container in a towel. Discard sunscreen past its expiration date. If there is no expiration date, discard it three years after purchase; if you do not know its age, discard it.14

What if your tube says Anua Intense Calming Cream?

Anua Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream is a fragrance free moisturizer formulated with heartleaf extract, ceramide and panthenol. Anua tells you to apply it over the face and neck after serum or ampoule, morning and evening, and to use sunscreen in the morning routine. The moisturizer and sunscreen have different jobs, despite their names sounding like they attended the same branding meeting.2
